A EURO is about a dollar, Isn't it?
A Berlin politician has come under fire for suggesting that poor people should be encouraged to catch rats by offering them €1 per dead rodent. The intriguing idea entails some gnawing practical problems and has been called "inhuman and cynical".
A job opportunity for Berlin's poor?
Picture the scene -- hundreds of poor people armed with clubs chasing rats through the streets of Berlin.
There's something Dickensian about the notion, but it has been proposed by a Berlin politician who is now being criticized for suggesting that the city's poor should be enlisted to tackle the growing rat infestation in the center of the German capital.

At the close of the markets today, €1 = $1.44.

Low $1.27 for one Euro; high, $1.56, When it became a general currency back in 2002, the Euro traded about even with the dollar, and one Euro = two DM. Remember seeing this when I was in Munich, just about this time of year in 2001. They were busy converting the machines that issued transit passes from Marks to Euros.
The bigger problem in Berlin is the wild boar. That's boar as in Arkansas razorbacks, not as in "bore." They run wild in the many parks in and around Berlin. Since the city began hunting them to keep populations down, they've moved into the urbanized areas.
