2. I believe in the honesty of the finder but I just don't buy where the money came from or what its intended purpose was.

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — A Murfreesboro, Tenn., woman chose not to follow the old saying "Finders keepers, losers weepers" when she discovered nearly $100,000 in a bag at a local Cracker Barrel restaurant. But it wasn't that the thought didn't cross her mind.

"Satan will tempt you," said Billie Watts, 75. "I have been having real bad teeth problems. I thought, 'I'll get my teeth fixed.' "

She ultimately decided to return the money she found in a bag in the women's restroom to its rightful owner.

Watts had to be coaxed by Michael Peralta, one of her 12 grandchildren, to tell her story.

"I'm proud of her because if anyone in the world deserved to find $97,000 it was them," Peralta, 31, said of his grandparents, who live in an apartment and depend on their Social Security checks.

If I found a stash of cash, my first thought would be, "Okay. Where's the camera? This has to be a setup".

Honestly, if it's just stacks of money in a paper bag with no way to identify the original owner, then I don't see how it's wrong to take it. Maybe wait around for a few minutes to see if anyone comes back for it.

How is this any different than finding a quarter or a dollar or even $100 in the restroom floor? Do we think to take it to the clerk and say "Here. Some dropped this. They might need it". No, we consider it "good luck" (at someone else's expense, literally) and go on our merry way.

Also, how do we know that the clerk won't play dumb and keep it for themselves?

Here's what I would do: if it was identifiable, I would call the owner and give it back. If it wasn't, I would go ahead and take it with me, hold it, and check for reports of someone looking for lost money. If someone claimed it, I would turn it in. If nobody claimed it, it's mine.

I think the woman made the story up, either out of delusion or dementia or wanting some attention. Or perhaps wanting someone to fix her teeth for free. A bag full of $1,000 bills (which haven't been printed in many years) and she knew it was *exactly* $97,000? Yeah right.

Yes, I'll agree. But, If you don't know who to give it to, then how are you supposed to give it back?

It's like one of us finding a $100 dollar bill in the mall parking lot this week... We're certainly going to pick it up, but, who do we give it to? How many of us would just keep it?

If you find a bag of money in public with no identity attached to it and nobody claims it, then it's yours, IMO.

However, as Ace said, this story is likely BS, and the odds of finding that much cash money anywhere are slim unless it's "Black Economy" money. There little reason for the legit wealthy to carry around that much cash.

Friend of mine did find a hundred on the floor at Lowe's the other day. She returned it to the counter just as a store employee was getting chewed out by his manager for being a "hundred dollars short". He...and the store...were profusely thankful to my friend. I say there should have been a gift card in the waiting for her...
