Heck, who cares where the money comes from? There's been a part of me that has wanted to have Eric's success, with a high caliber heritage show, plus be able to own my own signal...and why would Greer want to get into Elkins anyway...WVRC already owns all of the Elkins signals...

Other Green Bank trivia: WELK was the first FM in Elkins, and was on 95.3 (right?)...directional in order to protect what used to be a much larger radio quiet zone. Obvously those rules have sense been relaxed, WDNE came along, and WELK moved to 94.7 where it presently resides, playing Classic Hits.
Lester did nights there for a while back in the day, right? Was it still upstairs in the big house in downtown Elkins?

Eric's station used to be contemporary. I don't know the timelines involved, but WVRC bought then-rock 94.1 WQZK, Keyser and took it CHR and now WQWV is country. So, his employer is also his competitor.
BTW, the Washington Post published a travel piece on Green Bank today.
It is very interesting stuff, especially since its in the backyard for most. I was looking at some pictures of Green Bank and there are school kids playing baseball and you see this giant satellite dish in the back yard of the school. The residents there are so used to it. I would be a little uneasy, but thats just me.

WELK and WDNE FM are on different towers about a hundred yards away from each other. They're both in a great location to overlook Elkins, and have a good look off to the west and northwest. But they're not even at the top of Kelly Mountain, and in the direction of Greenbank, the antennas look squarely into the side of a mountain. That factor is a key part of why that antenna farm is there.
I don't think the rules for FMs have been relaxed any. The ultimate call comes from one guy at Greenbank, and he's been more tolerant toward cell towers in the valleys and ultra low power translators, but is still pretty tight about everything else.

And that's a real easy shot for the 'ol STLs from the WVRC Elkins building to ELK and DNE...I miss being able to see the tower site from the studio parking lot...or, in the case of WVSR, having it in my backyard...kinda cool/kinda sucked when the station went on backup before the backup antenna array was moved further up on the tower...one could hear NeYo playing in one's microwave there at one point...
There's the stem of a really cool discussion, now that I've seen the unique challenges of engineering in the mountains versus the flat parts of NC...heck, we have a tall tower, 100,000 watts, and wide, deep processing...look at the situation in Mingo and Logan counties...or Al's challenges in Flatwoods, Craigsville, etc.

What about WQHY Prestonsburg or WSIP Paintsville. I know WQHY is on Maggie Mountain near the golfcourse. We did a tower shoot up there and the hill was complete hell to climb. WSIP is a little easier to get to but still a pain. We found a tower on Rolland Mountain in Prestonsburg, its just opposite of Maggie Mountain, wasn't sure who that could be, maybe one of Gearharts?
