Eastern Panhandle Gets Sports...sorta

If it's about broadcasting, radio, TV, satellite, cable, this is where to talk about it.

Eastern Panhandle Gets Sports...sorta

Post by BobFrank »

Winchester, VA' s WTFX-AM 610 is moving it's sports format to sister station WMRE-AM 1550. 1550 is currently running a satellite Standards format. No word on what 610's new format will be.

The "sorta" portion is while the Eastern Panhandle is getting sports, at night 1550 is lightbulb power at 6 watts, so not a really great nighttime station. Great during the day at 5,000 watts though.

Some will remember 1550 as the AM side of WXVA from the 80s, 90s and 00s. WXVA-FM 98.3 became WKSI and moved to Stephens City, VA (south of Winchester) in 2003.

At one time, WMRE had the distinction of having the lowest nighttime RF power of any AM radio station in America.

A little follow up to the whole thing.....looks like WTFX-AM 610 in Winchester will go dark come November 17. The site the towers sit on is owned by someone other than Clear Channel and has been sold, essentially evicting WTFX. From what DCRTV is saying, it is going to be a retirement community. Looks like WMRE (probably to be WTFX 1550) will be the lone CC AM in Winchester.

A lot of AM stations should just go off the air.
