I read that earlier today in celebrity news crap...aren't we all "colored"? She should never answer questions about ANYTHING. I just convinced my 90 year-old grandmother that this term isn't appropriate when referring to race. Took a very long time, and she might be bluffing me...what year IS IT ANYWAY???!!!

Given how hopelessly out of touch Lindsey is, the only real surprise in her statement is that she used a two-syllable word ("colored") where most would have used the monosyllabic "black."

But, then again, most people are not inexcusably disastrous fabrications of protoplasm, bereft of intelligence, talent, sense, taste and class.

What does the C in NAACP stand for, if colored is so offensive? Every ten years it seems black people pick a new euphimism and move the old one into the "offensive" column. Me, I refuse to say African-American, it's silly. Like Teddy Roosevelt, I don't believe in hyphenated Americanism anyway.

Hmmmm...I get your point, Jet. Also, I agree that if we are citizens, we are AMERICAN. Period. As a country, we only continue to PROVE we're behind the times by making such an effort to say "Hey look, we FINALLY DID IT!" regarding our president-elect. Oh, well. Just this freckled, somewhat blotchy-dry-skinned American's 2 cents.

In Africa, there are: whites, coloreds, blacks, and Africans.

Given what constitutes each of those distinctions, Barack Obama would be considered 'colored'.

I say colored is a eupemism (which I mis-spelled in my other post; sorry,) because it was considered at one time (and for a long time) a respectful way to say negro. I don't know why people felt it was more respectful, but they did. Colored fell out of favor in the Black Panther era, and black became the preferred term. Now black has been offset by African-American, a foolish term which is specious, wordy, misleading, and to my mind, smacks of revisionism. I don't say colored because some find it offensive or say they find it offensive, but neither will I say African-American. I call caucasian people white and negro people black, when there is need to make that distinction at all, which is very rarely. No offense is meant by me in my use or disuse of any of these terms.
