HUNTINGTON --
The state's largest medical meeting will have a new name to honor founder Dr. Jose I. Ricard, who died on July 5.
The Annual Jose I. Ricard Family Medicine and Sports Medicine Conference will be held Nov. 14 through 16 at the Pullman Plaza Hotel. More than 1,500 people are expected to attend.
Ricard started the conference as well as Marshall University's sports medicine program. He assisted the school's athletes since 1981.
The conference is the only medical meeting in the region that brings together the medical profession, the business community, students and the public. National and local speakers will educate physicians and health care professionals on 27 medical topics during the conference.
A wilderness medicine symposium also will be held during the Sunday morning sports medicine program.
This year's sports celebrity speaker will be Mike Bartrum, former Marshall University and NFL football long snapper and tight end, who spent the last seven years of his career with the Philadelphia Eagles. Bartrum will speak at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, on "The Role of Sports Medicine in Professional Sports."
Other conference speakers include Dr. David Doman, Dr. Angelo Licata and Dr. Steven Moss.
The conference helps fund charitable programs, including scholarships and an annual program encouraging underprivileged high school students to pursue health care careers.
