Marshall to get new cameras, WSAZ pissed.

This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

Sounds like a poorly written press release triggered the response.
Word is that Scott Saxton is pissed at Marshall for some reason.

Gratz to the people at SAZ!!! Finally someone calls Bullshit on the state for wasting our tax dollars, hopefully this is the beginning of a trend, the mandate only applies to broadcasters, last time i checked marshall didnt have an operational transmitter so why do they need to upgrade? With OUR tax money.

I call this sour effing grapes on the part of WSAZ and Gray Television.

Our students deserve to work with the same equipment that they will be using when they join the work force. The sad part is that colleges and universities have better equipment, networking and software than corporations and industry. Of course, as a corporate entity we have to put money in the pockets of shareholders and not provide a testbed for implementing the newest technologies.

The sad part is Marshall did have a TV station. Until WVU alumni decided that they would control the public airwaves in this state and consolidated the three transimtters into a network run by Morgantown. Now there is no access to the net from anywhere but Morgantown. Give ch 33 back to Marshall....where it belongs!

Change Morgantown to Beckley.
The operations perhaps. But the "state" produced programs (A Closer Look, Dr.s On Call, Outlook, Etc.) and even the damn fund raisers are from Morgantown. It's as if the rest of the state doesn't exist. There's not even a studio in Charleston, where you would expect one!

Give 33 back to Marshall with the upgraded studios; give Tec. or UC the old stuff and do co-operative regional programming from Huntington-Charleston. It was intended to be such a station, not just a Morgantown outlet! Put "PUBLIC" back in "Public Broadcasting".

And while I'm on this rant....

When someone changed the visual net ID to mixed calls and channels, why did it take two months to correct it? And naturally, Morgantown is first on the list, correct channel numbers or not! Life does exist south of Morgantown and PA is NOT part of WV !!

Since that'll happen NEVER, how about this:

If Marshall is so damn eager about the television and MU Report aspect of the journalism school all of a sudden, why not purchase one of the low power operations in Huntington. The top (and perhaps only) two are the HSN and TBN outlets. Petition for more money so now you have cash to legitimately upgrade an actual television signal to Class A status, not to mention convert it to digital operations (to add an additional channel or two for revenue purposes.)

If there's any department within the J-School that needs emergency funds, it's WMUL. Perhaps ask for emergency funds due to the upgrade to HD Radio? Give ol' Chuck Bailey a few dollars to upgrade 88.1 to standards that are even being met at much smaller commercial stations. How about an automation system to let them finally go 24/7. The Parthenon has fancy new computers, TV is now catching up... so how about we take care of the station that started non-commercial broadcasting in West Virginia?

Am I reaching too high here? Too much to ask for?

The state gubmint was intentionally misled, and WSAZ has the moral responsibility to bring such scams forward.

I almost believed that! I wanted to believe it, but....

Remember that liberalism is all about real resources and rewards to only the anointed and their anointed. A mere formality to initiate a transfer of money from one gubmint employee's department to another, the reason listed on the paperwork was pure BS designed to fool those who might actually look at it, and I'm not talking about the politicians to whom it was addressed; the author probably thought no one who actually knew the truth about it would ever look.

The only reason you're saying that is because you believed the term in the first place.

The majority of tv stations, especially in this state and a few of the surrounding ones, dont have the newest and greatest gear... people wonder why radio shack is still in business, i'll tell ya why. Because stations need adapters and part made to hob-cobble (like that, i made up a word  ) together. When I joined the workforce and worked at my first few jobs, I operated equipment I was told I wouldn't have the chance to see unless it was at a museum or a public access station. These kids shouldnt have their expectations too high before we get to smash em. Takes the fun outa teaching those "life lessons" we all learned when we first stepped into the biz. Besides, those tax dollars coulda been put to better use, this state needs to worry about other problems and let the colleges take care of themselves, they dont seem to be hurting too much.

It sounds to me more like WSAZ found a factual inaccuracy in the letter written by Dr. Dennison to Sen. Plymale, reported it as such, and received a letter from Dr. Dennison reflecting his acknowledgment that the press release was incorrect. That acknowledgment did *not* cover the inaccuracy included in the letter sent to Sen. Plymale (or at least that wasn't addressed in the WSAZ article), which is much more troubling in my estimation since it was Sen. Plymale who requested the funding during a special session in June, perhaps doing so because of the incorrect information he received.

I'm happy for Marshall to receive the $800K grant -- an upgrade to the university's broadcast facilities should help current students and potentially entice future students with interest in broadcasting to come to Marshall as opposed to another university. However, WSAZ appears to be in the right with its fact-checking work.

Do you know how many interns and fresh out of college young adults I have reprogrammed to step back to old versions software? It is not a travesty, but it is pretty amazing to consider that 15 years ago colleges were turning out students that could "step up" to the ways of corporate culture. Now, we have to train these young adults how to take two steps back because corporations to not have access to the monies that institutions of higher learning can get their hands on through grants, subsidies and extremely high tuition.

I am hoping that Marshall can teach their graduates to have the proper video and grafx ready for th4 start
of the 6 pm news, so that when the first and most important story in the news is introed, we see the actual story.
That would be valuable to WSAZ.

Well...One sentence indicating that the upgrade was required by Federal mandate seems a little fishy because Marshall doesn't have any broadcast television stations. Way to play the uneducated guv'ment for $800K. I'd apply for some cool (emergency) ham-gear but KY checks those things.

(It would take less than 10% of those funds to convert WMUL-FM to IBOC).

Of course, when the God-ellators were hemming-in 88.1, an engineering study was completed to allow 9KW from Rotary. (New antenna and transmission line.) The University didn't act and 88.1 is forever 1.15KW from -19HAAT. I guess that's good for me, though, because of the 88.1/98.5 I.F. relationship. Thanks Marshall. Now go give MU Report some terrabytes.
