HUNTINGTON --
A new tip line initiative from the Huntington Police Department will offer monetary rewards for information in unsolved cases.
The Crime Stoppers program is operational at telephone number 304-696-4499. All information will be kept confidential, but callers must leave their name and contact information to be eligible for monetary reward. Anonymous tips are still appreciated, said Huntington Police Capt. Hank Dial.
Callers who provide information leading to an arrest will receive up to $500. Decisions about distributing the reward money will be made by detectives, along with a Crime Stoppers committee of private citizens.
The program will provide a platform to collect tips in major cases, but it is mainly designed to encourage public participation in solving everyday investigations.
The reward money will be paid from a private account established with the City of Huntington Foundation. The Crime Stoppers fund will consists of private donations, including up to $500 a month from Kindred Communications. The radio station company also will contribute air time each week to highlight particular unsolved cases.
