Drunk hit by train doing OK

BEVERLY - A Waterford man who was struck by a train early Saturday is continuing to recover in a Charleston hospital. Injured was Joshua S. Schaad, 28, 17328 Muskingum River Road. Police said Schaad was drunk and walking home along a set of tracks when he decided to stop and rest.

"The shortest way home was along the tracks, but along the way he apparently got tired and thought he would take a little nap," Washington County Sheriff Larry Mincks said. "He curled up right in the middle of the tracks."

Around 4:47 a.m. a CSX train pulling 90 cars struck Schaad. The locomotive operator saw Schaad but could not stop the loaded train in time, Mincks said.

"He was very fortunate not to be killed. The train knocked him off the tracks but his injuries were still significant," Mincks said.

Schaad was transported to Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital in Parkersburg and later flown by medical helicopter to Charleston Area Medical Center. Mincks said Schaad suffered a broken hip and leg. Also, the man's other hip was dislocated and he sustained several cuts and bruises.

"He was in surgery most of the day (Saturday), but from what I understand he's doing very well, considering he had just been hit by a train," Mincks said.
