An understanding of large people

This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

An understanding of large people

Food for thought: Intellectual activities make people eat more than when just resting, according to a study that sheds new light on brain food.

This finding might also help explain the obesity epidemic of an increasingly sedentary society in which people still have to think now and then.

Researchers split 14 university student volunteers into three groups for a 45-minute session of either relaxing in a sitting position, reading and summarizing a text, or completing a series of memory, attention, and vigilance tests on the computer.

The scientists had determined beforehand that the thinking sessions consumed only three calories more than resting. After the sessions, the participants were invited to eat as much as they pleased.

Though the study involved a very small number of participants, the results were stark.

The students who had done the computer tests downed 253 more calories, or 29.4 percent more than the couch potatoes. Those who had summarized a text consumed 203 more calories than the resting group.

Local man loses 350 pounds, changes life
By Nick Claussen, The Athens News

It wasn’t that long ago that Darin Dillinger was so large that he could hardly walk, had trouble fitting into his friend’s car, and was worried that his weight problem would kill him.

Today, he has lost more than 350 pounds, walks all around Athens, and feels like he has a whole new life.

Dillinger, who is 23, grew up near Guysville and attended the Federal Hocking Local School District. His weight problem started when he was in fourth grade, and after that he was always heavy, he said. Part of the problem was that he began eating large amounts of pasta and pizza, with very large portions at most of his meals, he explained. In high school, the problem got worse...

Coolbreeze, you think these people don't have enough problems without you posting humiliating pics of them on the internet? These are local people. Engage your purient interests elsewhere.

These are the same people complaining about me being a smoker. We have been vilified and crucified for years non-stop. And as they say, people in glass houses right? What gives them the right to tell me what's healthy?
Local or not, the problem is one that WV State doctors tell me you haven't seen ANYTHING yet when it comes to smoking vs. obesity. They say that smoking is so far down the list that it doesn't even rate, while obesity is about to cripple the health care system.

Strange, no one feels sorry for smokers, but show a local fatty and it's pity city.

I disagree, I don't see these people you photograph being the root of anti-smoking crusades; quite the opposite, they know they are next in line as targets of the leftist-socialist goodnics. You should have some sympathy. But irregardless, I don't think there is any good reason to post pics of people on this site, people that might well see this sight, for the purpose of humiliation, on the premise that they deserve ridicule not for any actions, but because of the way they look. How would you feel if somebody went around taking pics of smokers smoking, and posting them on www.stupidcharlestonwvasmokers.com? Would you feel no violation if your picture appeared there, and your co-workers found it first? Let's have a little charity, one for another.

I have run into a lot of people that feel the way that I do here: you don't have to look at fat people that are nearby but you do have to breathe around a person that is smoking. I mean c'mon! I've never heard of person having their health problems being attributed to "second hand fat"...

I had a thought about this just a couple of weeks ago while wondering whether to make eye contact with an exceptionally large person using one of those carts at a local grocery store (yes, loading her cart with little but crap, by the way)....

Years ago, large people appeared on daytime tv and cried because "people just stare at me!" Alright....people apparently got that message and stopped looking. Now, large people appear on daytime tv and cry because "people just look right through me like I'm not even there...it's like I don't even exist!" Okay.....now what???

Well... I have two legs in this fight, bitches. I quit smoking and gained about 30 pounds.

I was healthier as a smoker. I had more energy, too.

Now, I am just fat and pissed off.
