Ratings
Pretty quiet in here.
Everybody's usually banging their ratings-drum this time of year.
Must be pretty bad.

Congrags to WMEX and WRZV for their climb in the Charleston market..... hope that you can continue the rise........
Kid.......the format that WMEX plays, is the best in the valley(IMHO)..... don't screw it up too bad!
And Woody.... keep up the great work at WRVZ.... for a little class A station, you keep moving forward !
I hope that all of you PD's out there remember, its not about TPO or ERP, it's about content for your target audience..... that's what makes the ratings what they are(in this less than perfect world).

Damn. Don't give this guy a book. Otherwise, a 150 watt station from Martha's Vineyard and an operation out of the Netherlands would show up in the Charleston ratings.TimeEnuf wrote:Congrags to WMEX and WRZV for their climb in the Charleston market..... hope that you can continue the rise........

Live webcam from Holland! Live! And free!Cameron wrote:...and an operation out of the Netherlands....
More action than you'll see almost anywhere (except when everybody's asleep...six-hour time difference, mind you!), and you have NOT seen shapes and sizes like this in America!
mms://213.46.70.160:2074/
Some are shorter, some are longer, and some are so long that you think they'll never end! Man, some are like two or three times as long as is typical! Some are thinner, and some look literally twice as big around as others! Some are smooth and sleek and seem made for live video, and others are almost ugly and dirty but clearly possess the raw, driving power that gets the job done! I guarantee you that most of you have never even imagined they can look like this!
mms://213.46.70.160:2074/
There's sound, too! You'll be able to hear most of 'em getting ready to come before they do...some are all but screaming! Some come really fast, but some seem like they're never going to come. You'll see people literally lining up and waiting for some of 'em to come! Sometimes, two will come at once...if you're really lucky, you can see three come at once (and wonder how they all come so close together)!
mms://213.46.70.160:2074/
This morning -- and I'm not making this up -- I actually saw two people with a pony! Right there in the middle of the screen! I've heard a rooster more times than I can count, and what's going on with the bicycles??! Those Dutch are nuts!
mms://213.46.70.160:2074/
Like I said, there's a six-hour time difference, and things really slow down after 5pm eastern before picking back up after 12 midnight eastern. You will still see action in between, but you might have to wait a long time...as much as those Dutch like to "ride," not even they stay up all night doing it.
Might be a "noise" thing....these things do tend to get a little loud!
Check it out! Totally live and totally free!

WOW-------thanks Cameron!
None of those links worked.
So----why would you post THIS-----when your original post was about 'ratings.'
Just curious.
Also-- curious about Morganhole.
Nothing about that OR Charleston.

Re: Ratings
I'm guessing it's because there are no stations in Charleston or Huntington with the calls WMEX or WRVZ? There's a WMXE and a WRVC, and a WRYV.

Re: Ratings
What can we say about Arbitron Ratings? @#$% THEM! and the idiots who pay for the numbers.
Their newest trick is to just show their paid clients ONLY so everyone else, including stations
that are on top don't show up at all. This is the case for Elkins-Buckhannon and
Morgantown-Clarksburg. Rather pathetic I'd say. But we already know what the trend has
been in the last few books. Additionally agencies don't buy you unless you have great numbers,
so we don't need Arbitron and their games. WDBS The BOSS 97 FM with just 1/3 of our signal
in the metro counties is riding on top, add just 1 additional county Nicholas in the mix and we're
on top...add more and we blow them away. WKQV 105.5 in just 1 year is kicking ass as well!
So there's my take on Arbitron Ratings...

Uh-----okay--------so you didn't do well.
Do you honestly think anyone will believe you wouldn't have gone insane with glee when you had MONSTER numbers?---OR---would you have said the same thing?
Me thinks me knows the answer.
Plus----you should know as well as anyone that the book distribution in the counties you cover are all about 15-30 in distribution---and only 12+ in demos.
I'm a little surprised at your outburst.
Also---I didn't realize it was Arp that posted that........are we sure he did?-----that's not an "Arp" post......that's an "anti-Arp" post.

A funny, quick digression based on the Netherlands reference. Sorry if it's seen as a threadjack attempt, but that's some reasonably funny comedy, right there...I don't care who you are!
I think I just saw military action. Seriously.

The electronic and printed versions of the results to the stations and agencies remain the same...it's just the public releases in some markets that have non-subscribers not included.

If you know all that, you must be a subscriber, right? What's the complaint?
T'was I....watch (preferably between midnight and 4 or 5p eastern) and see......Kitesgot wrote:Also---I didn't realize it was Arp that posted that........are we sure he did?-----that's not an "Arp" post......that's an "anti-Arp" post.

you that only the Arbitron clients are on that list...with Arbitron you always have to read the fine print.
As for the books placed in the counties, all our stations are in the Elkins Metro, those counties and the TSA counties
all get aound 50 books each.
As for the outburst, the topic was why are we not talking about the Ratings since they just came out,
my response is that Arbitron ratings are meaningless if they don't have everyone's numbers in that market.
Finally, if you know enough people in the business, you can see the numbers anytime you want, but
of course I can not use the information I see. Most advertising agencies have the numbers anyway
and buy our stations based on those numbers.
I guess I could give those other guys a heart attack and buy the ratings as well, then put that info out
to everyone on the street, but at $25,000 a year PER STATION, I'm not sure who would have the
heart attack first, them or me!
Kitesgot, you miss my point. I'm commenting to the fact that Arbitron's ratings don't really show the truth to the general public. In the past you might remember "embargoed" now they just show ONLY the Arbitron client numbers. So if that client is #3 in the totals, but the two top statons are not subscribers, that client now looks like #1. Go to http://www.stationratings.com and see what the comments are in the Elkins Metro. Radio and Records does not tellUh-----okay--------so you didn't do well.

Re: Ratings
It's been customary for Arbitron over the years to release to the media (hence the public)12+ Monday-Sunday ratings for markets. Usually these lists include all stations with numbers above a certain share, usually .5, in the "book." Customarily these number include both subscribers and non-Arbitron subscribers, although they may exclude non-commercial stations. In the past these lists the 12+ numbers for a market, as we all know, are in the nature of a "beauty contest," Arbitron discourages release of specific demographic rankings to the public because of the potential for this information to be misleading without all the qualifiers, and, of course, that's what subscribers are paying for to use in our sales presentations.
It is one thing if Arbitron embargoes a book because of issues with one subscriber (usually they are arguing over money). Thereby limiting the use of that rating information in sales activities by that subscriber, as well as other subscribers in the market. Such a dispute involves just the stations and Arbitron, and is not public.
In such a case, the fair thing to do is not release any 12+ numbers to the public and press until the dispute is settled.
It is another thing if Arbitron publishes 12+ numbers without listing all rated stations (above a certain share cut-off, of course) because of a contract dispute with one company. As Al notes, this gives the public the false impression that the stations owned by that company do not have an audience. Hence it is an attempt by Arbitron to use their monopoly power over ratings to publicly embarrass that non-"compliant" company and force them to agree to Arbitron's contract demands.
It is my opinion that such tactics indicate active malice on the part of Arbitron, and that such actions constitute a deliberate attempt by Arbitron to interfere with the business of those radio station owners excluded from the 12+ public listings. Such actions would seem to me to be good cause for legal action against Arbitron.
