ANOTHER WOWK PICKET?

Got this press release in my inbox today:

"NABET-CWA Local 27 will be holding an informational picket beginning at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22nd in front of the Charleston Studios of WOWK-TV 13 at 13 Kanawha Blvd, West."

So, I tried contacting some of my connections at the station. Some non-union employees were not even aware, and the union folk are very tight-lipped. However I have learned what the "Lady in White" mentioned in a previous thread is.

Aparently "The Lady in White" is a van to take union folk to Bray Cary's house to picket! If i missed this part in the previous thread, I apologize. I have a short attention span. I guess the "lady in white" hasn't been needed quite yet. But since they are aparently picketing outside the charleston station tuesday, I'm sure the "lady" is gassed up and ready.

Anyone got any info? Anyone know how Gargamel (Bray) feels about the smurfs launching a revolt? I'm sure this has Azrael (John Fawcett) chasing his tail!

I use to work for a #2 station in Ohio that billed about 2-3 million a year more the market leader.

Just because a station can polish a turd and sell it as gold to the public, it doesn't make them any more worthwhile to watch than the bottom-feeders.

And back to the subject of this board.... I would've been more surprised if the Nabet rank & file had actually known about the picket. I'm shocked the union's still around, frankly, cause the young staff coming up never wanted to keep the place unionized... it was always the old guard propping up the picket signs every so often.

And not only do they hire the random fucks off the street, they hire the random fucks off the street who will accept minimum wage (or close to it) for the job. Actual broadcast production or news-gathering experience seems irrelevant, judging from the output. I do have to say the goofier bits of WOWK's news video have toned down considerably in the past year or so. But I'm getting off the subject. I have been told the starting wage at WOWK for the news photographer types is less than it was ten or twelve years ago. Adjusting for inflation makes the wage even worse.

OTOH, given Gray Television's finances, WSAZ may evolve in the same manner as WOWK, only a decade later.

Are you retired? Cause you don't have a clue as to what owners are paying these days. The Union is absolutely your best friend unless you like wages less McDonalds.

When I was at WOWK everyone had previous broadcast experience and/or studies related to the work.

It would appear irrelevant when those people are forced to work with broken gear, the wrong gear, or a straight outta college producer, OR Non-programming management dictating programming. You would know this... if you worked in the business.

Since the Broadcasting Act of 1996, wages have declined. I.E. You made more in 1995 as radio talent. I.E. 1995 = $25k for midday's vs. 2008 $21k as a PD.
