From The Owner of K-Love And Air1...

This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

From The Owner of K-Love And Air1...

Post by Mr. Jones »

...comes a hot new format: God's Country!

Inside Radio:
EMF embraces a new format: “God’s Country.”

Educational Media Foundation is the largest noncommercial religious broadcaster, blanketing the country with 262 full-power stations and dozens more translators. Its voracious growth has led to the situation where in some markets it has more signals than programming, which includes the contemporary Christian “K-Love” and younger-skewing “Air One” formats. Now it’s linked with Rodney Baucom’s eight-month old God’s Country Radio Network to provide programming. Baucom tells Inside Radio “They’re recognizing the popularity of country music in the marketplace.” The network airs country artists’ faith-based songs such as the Brad Paisley-Carrie Underwood duet “Oh Love” which get little radio airplay. He says it’s “too Christian” for country radio, but “fits perfect” on a format with a religious focus.

“God’s Country” is now on the air in about a dozen markets including EMF stations in Utica, NY; Roswell, NM and Great Falls, MT. The first year will run without any EMF donation solicitation, although affiliates can plug local announcements in their stop sets. Baucom says he has two other group deals pending, giving God’s Country distribution in the South and Rockies. He also hopes to add some commercial broadcasters looking for HD2 programming.

Hmmm...

You know, I could be mistaken, but I'm sensing that you're trying to tell us something Scott. Hey, we're all friends here...well, we're all adults, here...OK, so most of us are bipeds. What I'm saying is, don't varnish it, Scott. Tell us what you're trying to say.

Seein' as how you asked:

1). Religion: blech!

John 14:6 has Jesus telling us that: "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me". Unless a person has a RELATIONSHIP with Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord, religion means nothing. It does not matter what denomination you are a member of, what church you attend, how many good works you do, how "Christian" your parents were, or how many "religious acts" you do...if you don't have the RELATIONSHIP, you're cooked. Also keep in mind that it was the folks who were religious that killed Jesus in the first place. Religions tell me that I have to dress a certain way, pray to people that can't do me a lick of good, do things that are in denominational constitutions or bylaws, and follow doctrine and procedures that are scripturally incorrect. Relationship tells me that I can be forgiven of my sins, have a powerful guide to help me live my new life, and usher me into Heaven when my days on this planet are done. The big thing is: a lot of people like to look to Jesus as their Saviour but refuse to acknowledge Him as Lord. In other words: He can do stuff for me but I'll never do anything for Him. This is why I hate religion. I had a friend once tell me "I've found religion". I immediately told him to "get rid of it as quickly as you can"!

2). K-Love: double blech!

If "Christian radio" doesn't minister, it's just "radio". I can hear all the K-Love songs at home, in my car, wherever I go...using my cd player, iPod, and computer. It would just be the same as listening to K-Love because THEY DO NOT MINISTER TO ME! There is nothing spiritually challenging about K-Love. What am I going to learn to further and better my life from listening to K-Love? If I am going to listen to Christian radio I am going to want to hear something that enriches my life as a born again believer, not just a "Christian Jukebox". It's the perfect background noise for a Christian life going nowhere. That sentence you just read did not come from me, by the way.

And I'm sure "Edna The Avatar Girl" agrees...

K-Love doesn't minister? Well, I haven't listened in awhile... I just heard Brother John doing a shift there and assumed his shtick was as awesome as it was on Powerline.

I used to love running that show.

By saying K-Love doesn't minister, I mean that it provides "Christian Entertainment" rather than some type of programming that is going to bring forth a new revelation or unearth a previously overlooked Spiritual truth. The Scriptures always quoted are "listener friendly" and thus not challenging, plus there is no "personal ministry" available. I would rather have the announcer lifting up the prayer request that I phoned or wrote in rather than giving me the chance to win the latest Third Day CD.

I'll check on the Edna being Jewish part. JFNJ thought she was Irish. She'll be by at three today. I'll investigate further for signs...

As a serious side issue here:

If someone could explain to me...or show me where the information is...on how make a gif file where you have a bunch of pictures just rotating over and over again, I could make one of all the Edna pictures and then use that as my avatar and you all would be happy. Then again, you could just wait for the movie.

I also will change my user name to P-DUB...

Let me play "devil's advocate," here (really, the pun is wholly unintended).

What you say, Scott, with respect to the rather diluted programming that passes for Christian broadcasting is something that I'm in no position to contest. But, couldn't that same thing be said for pretty much every endeavor of its type? And, let's remember that you, sir, as a sincere Christian are perhaps not necessarily the audience that they seek. Rather, could it be that it is those who are seeking the truths that you have come to know that are being courted? And, doing so in a non-intimidating way is, arguably, more likely to afford people comfort in relating to the concepts. In all likelihood, the conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic would not be profoundly musically enriched by listening to commercial pop radio. But, the kid across the street trying to learn to play the guitar might be, simply by exposure to something with which he is unfamiliar.

Please know that I'm not disagreeing with you. Far from it. I find your contentions not only valid, but largely in concordance with my own. You've stated how you'd like to see Christian broadcasting improved from the accepted standard of familiarity. How, then, would you like to see mainstream broadcasting improved in the same way?

Like, that is a really good point that I had never thought of! It lines up perfectly with Hebrews 5:12 ("...you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God's word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!"-NIV), Hebrews 5:13 ("Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness".--NIV), and 1 Peter 2:2 ("Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation,"). Kind of like buying "Greatest Hits" as your first Mott The Hoople album before you delve into any of the other nine...

The radio that comes from space isn't expected to sound like it doesn't originate in your hometown...but there is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON THAT ANY AIRSHIFT ON A TERRESTRIAL STATION SHOULD SOUND LIKE IT COMES FROM SPACE! First off, if you can't be fully staffed and live every second of every shift at least voice track the thing with a nicely loaded hard drive (no matter what your format is). Get as much local stuff on there if you can. I know of a cluster of stations that tried to become more "regional" and lost almost the entire audience of all the stations because the local PSA's, lost dogs, more localized weather, and local sports coverage was not there. Even if you have to go satellite, you can make that satellite feed sound local by putting in as much local stuff as possible. So it takes an extra hour a week to produce a couple of :60 "Community Calendar" type spots to use as filler. It sounds so much more professional than letting a PSA for a national organization play for the seventeen hundredth time. "Cat Scratch Fever" sounds the same on XM Classic Rock, satellite feed Classic Rock, or locally programmed Classic Rock. The difference that mainstream broadcasting can make is by giving them what space and satellite can't give and that is ORIGINAL LOCAL CONTENT.

That's my answer and I'm sticking to it.

PS: Putting together an animated GIF of "Edna The Avatar Girl" as soon as possible. Thanks for the link!
