Clear Channel owns both WEGW in the Wheeling area and WXDX in the Pittsburgh market yet WXDX is light years ahead of WEGW musically and in a few other areas.
I know it has the big city advantage but there is no excuse why WEGW can't throw in more new stuff amongst all the relics and retreads they contanstly play. I used to love Eagle now it seems like a dieing horse most of the time.
Being in the Homestead/Pittsburgh area has reminded me what GOOD radio soounds like(OK at least on some nights). Why can't the Wheeling market branch out past country, classic rock and George Kellas?
Nevermind I realise I probably answered my own question.
WXDX is hands-down one of the best alternative rock stations on the air - especially for a Clear Channel property. But comparing 105.9 the X to Eagle is sort of apples to oranges. I'd compare the eagle more to WDVE. Eagle wouldn't play anything new if they weren't the only rocker. Sort of like WCLG in Morgantown. Ever since WOMP-FM dumped CHR for satellite JACK crap - I've found Wheeling radio to be one of the worst markets in the region. All of it sounds canned and dull.
It's probably been ten years since I visited Wheeling, but I do remember listening to the legendary WOMP-FM for the first time and thinking damn! ... they sound HOT! Tight board operation, cool jingles, a great uptempo music selection (for afternoon drive) and an above average jock who really seemed to get into executing the format. Technically, the station sounded good. A powerhouse signal and audio processing that reminded me of WNCI in Columbus. The station "thumped" without sounding tinny or over-processed. Somebody really knew their way around the innards of the Optimod. I listened as my schedule allowed into the evening, and the night jock just OWNED Wheeling. The phones, the music, the energy. Incredible. It was like a small market version of WLS.
I honestly hate hearing all the negative comments about the Wheeling market. It's a shame to see two of West Virginia's best known radio stations (WWVA and WOMP) go to seed like they have.
But...but...but I read on the internet that there are "cookie-cutters" and "national corporate playlists" and all kinds of stuff like that! How can that be if these stations are so different?????
One or the other must not be true.......both can't be right, right???! No matter what reality and my own ears tell me, I gotta believe the internet and the bloggers and message board posters, right?!?

"Yes, you do; you just won't admit it!"
"Yeeee...it looks like a 'Belt Buckle & Ball Cap' convention in here......"

How different are any of them, anywhere?

Caring about the station's sound vs. not caring because caring costs too much.
