WASHINGTON, D.C. - Vice President Dick Cheney was at the Washington Press Club today to congratulate this year's winners of the Gerald R. Ford Journalism Prize for Distinguished Reporting on the Presidency. During a question-and-answer session toward the end of the luncheon, someone asked the vice president about his wife Lynne Cheney's revelation on MSNBC last year that "Dick and Barack Obama are eighth cousins."

The questioner jokingly asked the vice president if he and Obama were going to have a family reunion, to which Cheney replied he would "have no objections" though he said he doubted Obama would want one - "certainly not before November."

Then came the punch line. Cheney explained that during the course of researching his family lineage for Lynne's memoir "Blue Skies, No Fences" last year, he learned there were Cheneys on both his father's and his mother's side of the family.

"So I had Cheneys on both sides of the family and we don't even live in West Virginia," Cheney said.

Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia was not amused:

"Now that he or the Administration he represents no longer needs their votes, Mr. Cheney apparently feels that he is now free to mock and belittle the people of West Virginia. With his trademark arrogance, the Vice President even added, 'You can say those things when you're not running for re-election.' This pitiful comment is not entirely surprising when you consider the source."

EDITORIAL: Dick Cheney: Loser of the Decade

West Virginians are accustomed to tasteless jokes made by people who are so insecure about their own state or their own lot in life that putting down West Virginia -- at times an easy target -- makes them feel smugly superior.

However, we are not accustomed to hearing it from the second highest official in the land.

Dick Cheney is nobody's pick for the prom these days, following nearly two terms of bad publicity for his poor advising of the President on the Iraq War, among other matters. He is generally depicted as a surly grump in the popular press and as a coward who did everything he could to avoid military service in college, getting several deferments.

This cowardly streak has continued as Vice President, where he is said to exercise an inordinate amount of power, while staying safely behind the shadow of the President--who takes the knocks for both of them.

To beat all, his accomplishments are so thin that he will probably best be remembered for shooting a hunting buddy in the face. With friends like that, who needs enemies!

Moreover, he is a very conflicted man. On one hand, he and his steely wife, Lynne, give support not only to their daughter but to her relationship with her lesbian lover. But this is talking out of both sides of their mouth, because they both have been adamant in their support of traditional family values over the years. Or so they tell us.

So it's really no wonder why Dick is looking for someone to pick on these days, and West Virginia is the easiest dog to kick for D.C. types. The fact that Cheney chose the prestigious National Press Club to deliver his remarks, describing his family lineage, saying that he had Cheneys on both sides of their family. "And we don't even live in West Virginia," Cheney said a punchline.

Now, West Virginians need to let these kind of remarks roll off our back like water. They are meaningless and only serve to point out the kind of person who says them. We shouldn't get too worked up about another man's pathetic life. In fact, we should probably pray for him.

For surely it is obvious: West Virginia doesn't have the problem here.

I really don't care, either. I just find it odd that a VP would buy in to the stereotypes.

However, the stereotypes are not entirely untrue. Maybe so for the last 3-4 generations, but before then, WV was an incredibly isolated region, and people were few and far between. There was probably quite a few instances of "cousin love" back then.

For example, they did extensive research on the Hatfield clan, of Hatfields and McCoys fame, and found several cases of inbreding within the clan.

Now that there are many people available in the gene pool, incest is just not needed or desired.
