Attention PDs and MDs..
Stop playing Rock Star, by Nickelback. Now.
Seriously, its time has come and gone. The song is now 3 years old. It is no longer a current, recurrent, or any other meaningful radio programming term.
Just stop. No one will notice. I promise.
That is all.

For that matter...
Classic Rock PDs and MDs:
Stop playing Kid Rock altogether. Despite his name that crap he produces ISN'T rock. It's Hip-Hop/Rock crossover and it sucks.
PLEASE.

Since we're on a tear today ... hows about every other Classic Rock station on the dial changing formats. Music of your Life. Polka. Beautiful Music. The Best of the WWV Time Tones, The 24/7 Farting Contest channel. Anything.
I never realized how many Classic Rockers existed (in one form or another) until scanning the band last week. They have become as ubiquitous as Country stations here in Appalachia. If I hear "Lawd, I Was Born A Ramblin' Man ..." one more freakin' time, someone's gonna get hurt ...

Translators are a Pox on the FM radio dial.

You mean that new one with the deep voice I've started noticing lately? That voice is disturbing, but I'm just starting to like this new one!Big Media wrote:Stop playing Rock Star, by Nickelback. Now.

Sounds like an idea for XM's adult comedy channel....it could come at "half past (passed) the hour every hour." Or maybe "every morning and night."Hoosier Daddy wrote:...The 24/7 Farting Contest channel.
I'd listen!
Sometimes. Every once in a while.

OH NO!
FINALLY A THREAD THAT HAS BUGGED ME FOR 20 YEARS!
(remember folks--this is ME for my PERSONAL tastes and not necessarily what's good for the station)
The "Classic Rock" thing has become a joke with their 200 song rotation.
It seems to have lived it's life. I really enjoy "Classic Rock" until it was ruined. To me it's similar to working with a guy I work with, and he insists on stopping by a pub every night on the way home and loading up the juke-box with the same ole drivel.
Yes----that may very well be the 'drivel' that makes it work and AGAIN, I'm talking only about personal preference here.
1. The Doors. "LA Woman-----"Light my Fire"
2. Skynrryd---particularly "Gimmee three steps"
3. The WHO------OH HOW I LOATHE "TEENAGE WASTELAND" (or whatever it's called)
4. Aqua-lung
5. Gimmee Shelter
6. Anything by the Kinks
7.
And so on;
I remember a time when I used to search out stations that played this stuff, and would listen through static, lightning, static and lightning, fade outs, and everything else to listen because I couldn't stand the contemporary fare.
Now, I've gotten to the point that there isn't a classic rock station I can stay on for more than 10 minutes.
Lemmee axe you guys something. I know we're the minority because we've been blasted in the head with this stuff for years, and have to ignore it for career's sake, but how much longer does the 2-300 hundred song list for a Classic Rocker continue to last without major over-haul?
Seriously?-------Is it's time coming? I know that US folks listen differently than most people, but when does the same thing become prevalent in the main-stream? Does it at all? Or will there always be 25-54 men that will eat it up no matter what? It would seem to me that it can't continue.
I liked WDVE---Pittsburgh for a long time, even before it was cool, but these days I can drive to Pittsburgh and don't bother to flip to them when I'm close enough to hear any more.
It just would seem that some of those thing have to change at some point in time.
ON THE OTHER HAND----------I remember frequenting a night-club in the 80's. The guy had pretty much the same exact play-list every time I was ever there. The only time he would throw in something new, is if it had taken the nation by storm, and then usually, it would go away, and the old play-list came back. People never complained. So, I'm torn on this from a business/people-habit stand-point. But I tell ya, there are just some songs anymore that pop up on 'classic-rock' stations that are NO LONGER SAFE-SONGS-----They--are the exact ones that drive me away.
It's impossible for me to understand how some of these bands that still tour are able to bring themselves to the mic and do this over and over and over. One day----you'll see Tom Johnston of the Doobies start "Listen to the Music" on stage and slowly he pulls out a gun and blow his own head off.

So, let me see if I have this straight.
#1. There are classic rock based stations with playlists with as few as 200 songs. Please tell me which stations.
#2. I should stop playing Nickelback's "Rockstar" because you don't like it. My target audience's desires should have no impact on what I play or do not play.
#3. There is some magic cut off number for songs. Even if a song retains immense popularity over 20, 30, or 40 years I should stop playing after a specific number of plays. Please inform me of the specific numbers of plays.
#4 I may not have to drop these immensely popular songs, but only play them a certain number of times per year. What is that number per year and which much less popular songs should I play instead? Also, when my ratings drop by half because my competitors at Country, CHR, and AC continue to play the most popular songs in their format while I'm playing obscure or unpopular music to meet the demands of your classic rock format rules will you be there to explain it to my GM and owner?

Oh yeah,
Well, I guess we'll find out which farts are the most popular and never play those farts because we don't want to play the same farts all the time.
Oh, I know! We'll play a bunch of local and regional farts, because that is what people really want from a fart station! We'll throw in the least familiar and least popular farts from prominent farters instead the farts that made them prominent.
We'll completely ignore listeners when they tell us repeatedly and constantly they want the same old farts day in and day out. This should make us the most popular fart station.

Sa-lute.
One question, though....
Yes, but what about now...what about the modern day? We'll completely ignore listeners when they tell us repeatedly and constantly they want the same old farts day in and day out. This should make us the most popular fart station.
If there had to be a freshening of the air, so to speak, do you think listeners would enjoy the new farts coming from their favorite farters, or would they prefer the same farts re-cut with a different flavor by today's up-and-coming new generation of farters?

But it seems like the general audience disagrees.
Nickelback has been very hit and miss for me. "Photograph" sucked, only to be followed by "Savin' Me", which rocked, followed by "If Everyone Cared", which is ok but kind of sappy for rock, followed by "Rock Star", which is meh.
Well, play more of that new Cinder Road (I think that's the name) fart you spun last Thursday evening. I really liked it, which probably means most of your cores hated it...Jay Nunley wrote:We'll completely ignore listeners when they tell us repeatedly and constantly they want the same old farts day in and day out. Goddammit Nunley--------
How many times did I have to write:
"OF COURSE THIS IS MY PERSONAL PREFERENCE AND HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR IT TO BECOME EVERYONE ELSE'S?"--------
before you understood that I'm NOT criticizing YOUR CRAFT?
I knew while typing you'd jump on me, which was NOT the intent.
Once again-----IT'S MY PERSONAL OBSERVATION OF 20 YEARS OF LISTENING TO the so-called "CLASSIC-ROCK!"
I listened to KLC in 1982 religiously and most of the songs 20 years later were still in regular rotation. (that's not to say Nunley was doing it) THEN-----WFBY came on and I thought I was back in 1982 listening to WKLC again.........then go to Pittsburgh, flip on WDVE-----and I thought it was KLC in 1982 again!------It's like that everywhere.
I haven't heard KLC in quite a while,
AND as far as YOU are concerned, maybe you're different, got it together, you don't burn songs as if they're in a Top-40 rotation. I HAVE NO IDEA!
On the other hand it pisses me off that ANYTIME a "Classic-Rock" Station is questioned, there's a certain arrogance that comes with the reply.
I remember that from the late "70's------when I was jocking top-40, and anytime I would listen or hear a 'rock' station they would constantly run imaging and liners about how you wouldn't hear the same song in 10 hours.
Then if you ran into any of the "rock-jocks" it was always a "peer over the top of the glasses" look----sort of like, "you little boy, you have no idea about anything."
(Keep in mind, this also happened regularly at record stores. I think that's why I got into that movie about a record store with Cusack so much)
But then something happened-------they would DEFINITELY hold the same song so it wouldn't run within 10 hours-------BUT------they ran it every 10 hours for the next twenty-five fucking years.
So how long-------after running "boys are back in town" by Thin Lizzy every 3-4 days for 20 years does it begin to become a TURN-OFF? THAT is my point. People are NOT all that different. People in the business are going to have a MUCH FASTER burn-out rate than "joe-schmo" simply because they don't hear it every time. But there HAS to be some kind of rate of bailing out on songs once "Joe-schmoe" gets to that level also.
Jocks have a way of just tuning it out when they're working. "JoeSchmo" looks forward to listening so he can zone out on US!------So------WHEN does classic-rock become a dinosaur
Keep in mind---that I am ALSO a classic-rock listener and it's my favorite genre. I can't stand hardly ANYTHING that comes out these days and ALWAYS go backward 25 years ago-------just not to the standard same songs over and over.
Point being----when does THAT mind-set slowly begin to become ALL OTHER classic-rockers as well?

Just fuckin' forget it.
It's not worth it, and will cause an argument that will last longer than the Wheeling post.
I was simply trying to extract myself from "radio"---and instead try to figure out what "joe-shmoe" listener" thinks for a determination of how long it takes for "joe-schmoe" to become tired of the same ole-same-ole also.....as much as me.
For me, it was about 15 years ago.
That's it.
If I worked for a classic-rock station----- I would not deviate and do the playlist, but that point isn't available here.
