Toshiba Surrenders To Blu-Ray – End Of The Road For HD DVD

Japanese corporation Toshiba surrendered to Sony’s Blu-Ray technology and released a statement announcing the end of the road for the HD DVD. Toshiba says however that HD DVD consumers will continue to have full product support despite the decision not to develop and manufacture HD DVD players anymore.

Toshiba Corp. will put an end to the HD DVD business by the end of March 2008, which includes besides players and recorders, HD DVD disk drives for PC applications and games. However, the company will continue to support and develop the standard DVD format, regardless of what is going to happen to the HD DVD market.

Can anyone from say Betamax? I can't imagine anyone who bought a player in the last couple of months when the price went down is too happy. I heard an NPR report this morning talking about this. They said retail will start selling out the stock and customers can get great deals on remaining stock, for as little as $10 per title. $10 per title for a format going out of print?!!! I can buy regular DVDs between $5 and $1 for older titles! Who are they kidding?

It's official. Toshiba just made a statement saying, " it will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders." Cessation of the player and recorders are targeted for March 2008. Volume production of HD DVD disk drives for PCs and games will end in the same time frame.
About time... I've had a feeling since last summer that Blu would end up winning, but now, it's finally official.

The 50GB vs 30GB storage alone was the deal breaker for me.

Now if we can only get some $100 Blu players out there...

I guess I can start looking to purchase a Blu-Ray player. RIP HD-DVD.

My only problem is that neither format allows HD output over component video thanks to the MPAA.

I don't feel like buying a new DLP projector just yet...

Yea, the whole HDMI thing really sucks for early adopters. The sad part is that the many people who bought flat panels without HDMI were not necessarily "early adopters."
