It seems to me that, some years ago, there was a recording titled "Once You Understand" by a group known as Think, which was a bit of a downer. Teen is misunderstood...teen attempts to assert independence...teen feels oppressed...teen commits suicide...you know, a senseless loss of a promising young life.

"Once You Understand" by Think. It was around 1970 or '71, it was on Laurie, it entered the charts at least two different times (at least), and I just got a nice digital copy of it.jag wrote:It seems to me that, some years ago, there was a recording titled "Once You Understand" by a group known as Think, which was a bit of a downer. "Things get a little easier, once you understand"
"Son, there's more to life than joining a group"...

How about the entire Nashville establishment?Arp2 wrote:To me, though I'm not sure which earns the title, the most depressing song would have to be one that works to move culture and mores in the negative direction.
Why all the 'Skins hating?genlock wrote:"Hail To The Redskins".
Actually, had they got past Seattle, it is conceivable that they could've went through Dallas and NY. NE? Dunno. A 52-7 defeat earlier in the season would be a tough monkey to shake so soon.
As much as it pains me to say it, congrats to the Giants. They rightfully earned this victory high.
We'll see you next season.

Back to music...
I'm actually amazed on how many negative tunes actually put me in a good mood...
System Of a Down has some depressing stuff, but their music actually puts me in a humorous mood for some reason. I feel great after jamming Chop Suey, BYOB, etc. It's weird...
Sometimes, I just like to rock out I guess.
Probably the absolute most depressing song in history is some old song about a sick little boy dying on Santa's lap while asking for his last Xmas wish... That damn thing makes you just want to cancel Christmas all together...
Help me out, radiofan...

This is an old one, but it's depressing in the fact that it's so over-the-top that it's almost insulting.
"Last Kiss"
OK, let's examine this, shall we? This kid is driving his dad's car (which, given when the song was done, was likely to have been a gargantuan hunk of Detroit iron). He's driving left of center (why else did he have to swerve right?). He's going too fast (remember those "crying tires?") and consider that the vehicle he tried to avoid was "straight ahead." His girlfriend is killed and the kid blames GOD?!
Now, what's even worse is that "Last Kiss" is based on a true story! But, it was watered down (actually, three people died and two were seriously injured) and over-sweetened into the pseudo-romanticized bit of musical confectionery in which the gesture of a kiss takes precedence over life itself.

We could also include the much better written parody "I Want My Baby Back" by Jimmy Cross. If you have never heard it, it is "Last Kiss" with the added verse of him going to the graveyard and being reunited with his baby. The last chorus is sung from INSIDE the coffin.jag wrote:"Last Kiss"
"Oh, baby, I DIG you so much"...
