The Degree of (dubious) Distinction

This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

WVU reforms team to probe degree granted to governor’s daughter

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) —

West Virginia University’s Faculty Senate will decide Monday who should help investigate allegations that Gov. Joe Manchin’s daughter was granted a master’s degree she didn’t earn.

Three panel members and two alternates will be chosen to help assess the validity of an executive master’s of business administration awarded to Heather Bresch.

The candidates approved by the Faculty Senate’s Executive Committee are: Art Centonze, dean emeritus of Pace University; Ralph Katerberg, associate professor at the University of Cincinnati; Doyle Williams, dean emeritus at the University of Arkansas; Jacalyn Askin, an assistant dean at Arizona State University; John R. Campbell, president emeritus of Oklahoma State University; William Rundell, professor at Texas A&M; Lori Franz, former provost at the University of Missouri-Columbia; and Brenda Russell, executive associate vice chancellor for research at the University of Illinois-Chicago.

The 114 members of the Faculty Senate may nominate additional candidates from the floor.

Two WVU faculty members — professors Michael Lastinger and Roy Nutter — have already been approved for the panel.

Bruce Flack, vice chancellor for academic affairs for the Higher Education Policy Commission, agreed to step down earlier this month after some educators worried he was too close to the Manchin administration.

The committee is charged with investigating allegations initially reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that WVU officials rewrote records to award Bresch a degree in 1998, even though she only completed 22 of the required 48 credit hours.

Bresch, 38, works for Mylan Inc., a Canonsburg, Pa.-based pharmaceutical company with a lab in Morgantown. Its chairman, Milan Puskar, is a Manchin benefactor who also donated $20 million to WVU in 2003.

Bresch has insisted she earned her degree but has declined interviews.

This debacle will eventually consume all of higher education in West Virginia.
It may consume the Governor. I expect it to consume the leadership of WVU. I do feel sorry for those that have EARNED their degrees from WVU.

LONDON - New on the McDonald's menu: a takeaway diploma.
The government is giving the U.S. burger chain — along with a rail company and an airline — the right to award credits toward a high school diploma to employees who complete on-the-job training programs.

The plan, announced Monday, is part of a push to improve skills among young people and offer even workers who dropped out of school years ago a chance to gain official qualifications.

It's the first time commercial companies have been allowed to award nationally recognized academic credits for their own workplace training plans. Experts and business leaders had a mixed reaction to the plan, already being dubbed "McQualifications."

Exactly how many couches do you have to burn to earn a WVU degree?
