I visit Estonia each year (former communist country on the same latitude as Anchorage Alaska and about 300 miles from St Petersburg Russia) and they have several ice roads out to their islands.
When you consider that about 1/3 of the world is north of us, and all those people manage to live their entire lives in conditions that we wouldn't tolerate for a week... then you have to wonder what pussies we've become when they close schools around here due to an INCH of snow.

They close the roads here simply because the school board's don't want to have mommy and daddy sue for 10 million because little Leroy suffered emotional damage because the bus slid a little coming out of the hollow (pronounced holler).

Tallinn! Where all the drunkin Finnish come to pillage and plunder every weekend. Actually, I like Tartu better (one of the oldest university towns in Europe).
Right outside of Tartu, still hidden from view is the Europes longest military runway where the Soviets launched the infamous TU-22 Backfire Nuclear weapons bombers. I've photographed that area extensively, as a good friend of mine grew-up just a mile away and watched these planes take off every day. This base was the third biggest threat to America. Having said all that, keep in mind that the Estonians hated the Russians from day one, and helped to end that horrible regime.

No, as that is Lithuania. I have no reason to leave Estonia because I'm mostly interested in that area culture-wise because it gravitates towards Finland, Sweden and points north . Latvia leans towards Russia and points west, while Lithuania (where Tadas Vysniauskas is) leans towards Poland-Hungry culture-wise. The Estonian language is considered the most beautiful language in the world, and is a mix of several (mostly Finnish and Swedish) and it kept the Russians off guard for many years as almost a "code" language. However, Estonia is somewhat influenced by Germany due to the German Balts who hired the Estonian peasants for a couple of centuries. The "museum" you mention is one of the old German manor estates.

I've become a whiner myself when it comes to snow and cold weather. I couldn't tolerate that crap for an hour, never mind a week...
I was never happier than last summer when it stayed dry with endless weeks of sunshine. I was hoping the winter would stay mild, too, but it looks like luck finally ran out.
Oh well... At least I have my tropical screen savers.
