Scott Shannon subbed for Paul Harvey this morning.

Does anyone else hate Paul Harvey as much as I do?

As someone who didn't grow up listening to him and can't figure out why a guy who is so way past his prime and almost entirely without any value to the product or the format as a whole is still on gawd knows how many stations and makes gawd knows how many millions, I'd wager that I hate him more.

Paul Harvey is the winner of the Robert C. Byrd Award for Extended Public Service for the years of 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and, depending on brainwave readings, 2008.

* Strom Thurmond won in '97, though he never realized it.

Paul Harvey was someone I never appreciated when I was a young lad. But as I grow older, I enjoy his stories and will almost always listen when his program airs. His program and his comments are truly timeless. Hearing Paul Harvey's voice is like hearing from an old, trusted, and well-liked friend.

Walter Cronkite. Fred Rogers. Dick Clark. Robert Keeshan (Captain Kangaroo). Paul Harvey. These folks just can't be replaced by some 20-something Ryan Seacrest clone.

It will be a sad day in radio history when Mr. Harvey passes ...

Ditto.....except that I never do. Off the top of my head, I'm not even sure where to find him.

It's like hearing from an old, trusted, and well-liked friend. -- sort of like watching the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite.

No....it's the exact opposite! Harvey is actually credible!

If Harvey can be compared to anyone, it's Dick Clark.

I might try to catch Scott doing it....I'm having a tough time imagining it....

I heard him the other day. Sounds like he died around 1976 or so.

Paul, Jr., had some mental health issues and moved out of the limelight.

Pardon the Hallburnism but I met Paul Harvey in 1998 and spoke with him at some length. Even then, the radio legend seemed very diminished. Maybe, like many old folks, he was just having a bad day, but we who met him were all shocked at his frailty.

I'm on both sides... I love to hear the guy, but many of his "rest of the story" peices are, what SNOPES calls, glurge. Not quite true (in some cases flat out fictional, designed to tug the heart strings, not tell the truth.

I love his news though.

SNOPES rocks. I've used it to successfully cut my incoming chain emails to almost zero.

I'd like to think it's because they're more educated... I suspect it's because they removed the "party pooper" from the distro list.
