1949 RCA introduces 45 RPM record (I've still got several of those spider inserts around the apartment)



1956 Elvis Presley made his first recordings for RCA Records at The Methodist television, radio & TV Studios in Nashville. 'Heartbreak Hotel' was one of the songs recorded during this session.
1958 Jerry Lee Lewis was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'Great Balls Of Fire'.
1976 CW McCall went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Convoy', it made No.2 in the UK. CW McCall was in fact an advertising agent whose real name was Bill Fries.
2003 a haul of 500 Beatles tapes known as the 'Get Back sessions' stolen in the 1970's were found after UK police cracked a major bootleg operation in London and Amsterdam. Five men were arrested.
2003 Bee Gee Maurice Gibb was fighting for his life after a heart attack following major stomach surgery. The 53 year-old singer had been rushed to hospital after collapsing at his Florida home.
2007 Madame Tussauds unveiled its fourth waxwork of Kylie Minogue, making the Australian pop star the most modelled celebrity after the Queen. The model became the first scented waxwork, wearing Minogue's Darling perfume.

When I was a wee lad, I liked Jim Croce's music. It was all good. As I got older (i.e. early 20's) it was more appreciable. Now, in my mid 30's, I do not know how the world revolved without the poetry of his lyrics.

And of course, I like the song "Don't mess around with Jim" even more knowing that 42nd St. is the one I visit in NYC.

I always thought that Jim Croce was one of the most overrated singers in the history of Rock. The oldies station play him incessantly for some odd reason. Had he not died (and by Rock rules thereby became a Rock icon for no other reason than the fact that he died) he would have just been another milk-toast guitar player.

CW McCall: I still have an album of his that included some pretty interesting stuff. Some songs are actually very good, like "Wolf Creek Pass" which broke the top 40 and also "Old Home Filler-Up an' Keep on a-Truckin' Cafe" and a couple more that didn't chart. As mentioned, his background was most interesting.

Agreed. Croce was just one of many early 70s "folk rock" dudes, along with James Taylor, David Gates, Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel, et. al. Of the whole bunch, the only true 'talent-on-loan-from-God' standouts were Simon & Garfunkel and The Immortal Harry Chapin.

CW McCall: I still have an album of his that included some pretty interesting stuff. Although I enjoyed his work, I was never a huge fan of Croce's, but I wonder, sometimes, if he might have shown us a bit more of the depths of his talents (putative or otherwise) had he simply lived a bit longer. After all (and let's be honest, here), much of the Beatles' earlier stuff was not particularly creative (some might call it derivative). It took John & Paul a little while to "find their voices," so to speak, as writers. Maybe Croce was just trying to "pay the bills" until he was established enough to stretch out a bit.

C.W. McCall actually does a couple of his hits on Mannheim Steamroller's patriotic music-themed CD.

I only know this because my Dad is a huge MS fan.
