You guys don't really think Coach Kidd actually alienated any listeners do you? I'll admit, I'm no expert on CHR or the average CHR listeners, but every woman that listens to Coach that I know went straight into protect and support mode (including the two or three who knew it was a stunt).
Even in a stunt it's always about how people actually use radio instead of how we think people use radio.

Helpful for saving money, not for making great radio.Arp2 wrote:Sure....dang helpful! I think everyone actually doing it will agree!Hoosier Daddy wrote:Automation.
Creates stations that sound robotic, bland, uninteresting.Arp2 wrote:Yes....reasonable early, has gone much too far now.Hoosier Daddy wrote:Voice tracking.
Certainly doesn't help with the "show business" angle, now does it?
Why are you so defensive about consultants?Arp2 wrote:Just does not happen like you keep insisting it does. You and your netkook sources just have this wrong and always have. Why do you keep at it? What do you hope to or think you gain by repeating this lie over and over?Hoosier Daddy wrote:Stale, national, consultant-driven playlists.
Why is everyone that disagrees with you a "kook"?
I never said that.Arp2 wrote:What would a consultant get out of playing his favorites at some station a thousand miles out of earshot?
I never said that.Arp2 wrote:What would a programmer get out of playing his favorites over listeners' favorites?
As usual, you put words in my mouth that I never said, than launch your attack.
A ha! Safe Lists! In other words, a collection of format-specific songs that are bland, well-worn, test well universally in every market with every audience member in the target age and gender range, and are almost always placed in a super-tight automatic rotation with other songs from the Safe List.Arp2 wrote:Besides, they're listener-driven "safe" lists! (And that's what they are...they are not playlists!) Where do "consultants" come up with their "safe" lists? From combining the exact responses of thousands of actual listeners, not other "consultants!"
Youse guys have turned Show Business into an Accounting class, changing station programming formatics into some type of complex algebra problem that only has one answer. What happened to regional favorites, or playing a (station approved) new song that was starting to break on the charts?
If consultants only helped develop in-house talent and worked with the station's PD to tweak the overall sound, I wouldn't be so critical. But consultants are the agents that have made most stations in a specific format sound the same from coast to coast. Same imaging. Same liner cards. Same jingles and "theme packages". Same play lists, or SAFE lists, or whatever you call it. When you add voice tracking and automation, you've almost totally lost the "show business" element.
All you have is McRadio.
We'll see. I'm not hopeful. With the exception of a choking load of advertisments, many stations want to mimic someone's iPod (as far as music back to back with almost no human interaction or presence). A little more flexible playlist and a return to a more personality-driven radio format might turn things around.Arp2 wrote:Hopefully an intermediate step...we'll see.Hoosier Daddy wrote:Stations that are nothing more than commercials and music.
Translators are a Pox on the FM radio dial.

Ditto on the ESPN Radio thing, although the overnight host, Jason Smith, may be the most annoying creatures I have ever heard on radio. Say what you want about him. but I think Stephen A. Smith (although I rarely agree with him) may be one of the most entertaining folks on radio or TV.

Agreed! And it seems like they think he'll get better with MORE airtime! It doesn't matter who they try to team him up with, he's still awful. Fortunately, I have XM and can just flip over to 142. I'm glad someone else thinks he sucks.webdesignguy wrote:The MOST annoying guy on ESPN Radio has to be Freddie Coleman. His delivery is horrible, especially when he says "E---S--P--N--Raid--eeeeo".
Glad to see they pushed him to "late" nights (when I'm not listening). Unfortunately, I have to hear him on weekends.
I like Colin Cowherd's show when I'm awake and in the car to hear it.

I found an Irish pub in Baltimore that has 18 year old Jameson, in addition to some of the finest single malt Irish spirits money can buy. I think of you every time I raise my glass. Come for a visit, and I'll buy. Sorry, I know it has nothing to do with this thread, but you ability to murder a bottle of rich malted hops and still help me get laid is the only thing I ever liked about you.
Happy New Year, ya Irish fuck!

If you insist, but remember that you made me do it. I actually got to see them live this year, while hanging out with 110,138 of my closest friends in Happy Valley. There were a couple hundred more, but I'm sure they were all bastards in green.Kiddconley wrote:

Little Billy in Indiana has a pair of abusive parents who are divorcing one another. As circumstances would have it, he's of the age that he can pick where he'll live. The judge asks him to choose, but the child says neither. He wouldn't be able to take the abuse. The kid has no other relatives to speak of, so the judge asks him to pick an adoptive family. After thinking it over for a while, Billy tells the judge he'd like to live with Charlie Weiss. A confused judge asks why. Because he couldn't beat anyone this year.
All of that being said, I wasn't going to attack Notre Dame. I mean.. Every service academy needs a team that practices the values of that particular branch. The Army has a hard nosed team. Tough kids compete against all odds on the D-1 landscape, sometimes in unwinnable situations. They march on game after game. Then you have Airforce. The Run and Shoot passing attack is a work of art. Each game has you believing you are at an airshow. Navy, with their marine brethern have a fantastic running attack, piling up yard after yard.... Then you have the Coast Guard with their team.. the 3 win Notre Dame. I figure if you play all of the service academies, you must be one.. It's really a win-win for ND if they do become a military institution. Irish need alcohol to fight... Tell me you wouldn't join that branch if you had the chance. I believe the Murphys said it best when they said, "Drink and drink and drink and drink and drink and drink and fight!"
Oh, and Duke Sucks.

The level of hatred for Rich Rod since his departure has to be seen to be believed.Kiddconley wrote: I'll come to Morgantown when the rest of the sorry ass team follows Rich Rod out of there.

I've had two casual acquaintances who are huge WVU fans tell me they're holding their noses, so to speak, and rooting for OSU and Notre Dame to beat Michigan next season.
Didn't some jock out of Charleston have the story about people buying the WVU 2008 calendars at a mall, and then after discovering the picture of Rich Rod on the back, taking them back to the store for a refund?

Ashton,
I've never seen someone go so far, for such an old joke. You added so much detail and imagery to the overall set up... that it actually made the joke funny again. Well done. Now, feck off. I would have at least thought we could have beaten Navy.
Shaf dog,
I'm in Ravenswood, which is what we would refer to as a "Third World Drinking" situation. They have a mexican restaurant which serves drink and a bar that only has canned beer. The closest town is Ripley, and they have no bar that I know of. It's so bad, I'm going up for Holy Communion 2 and three times just to try and get a buzz. I bring an extra shirt or two and change it out each time. I am either a raging alcoholic or the holiest person in Ravenswood. I expect to either kick the habit or a Stigmata any day now. My kids ask about you all of the time. You should come up for a weekend.. and we will have them fetch us beers the whole time. If we are lucky, the twins will get into a fist fight again. F the ufc.. I have a house full of Irish women! They were getting a little out of hand, until i told them they used to be triplets, and that I killed the other daughter for smarting me off. They were good for about 6 months after that. Anyways.. have a good New Year.

What up Krab??? Balls coming down in 3...2... I've tried to call you, but you have a different number every other week. Pay your f-ing bill and call me.
That was actually a line from the world famous Bob Campbell VSR' show back in the early 90's. You'd had to have been there at the time. You were probably just an 120 lb. infant back then (I would be nothing without a fat joke), but those were good times!
