WXCC power increase

There is a lot to be said for what Gen said. If you haven't lived or work here its hard to understand radio here. WVOW, the old WLOG, WXCC, WVKM...people are insanely loyal to these stations (well in WXCC's case they were until they shut down operations and moved to Pikeville). We have people of all ages who turn their radios on in the morning in one room of the house and they don't go off till they go to bed at night, if even then. Whether its because they can't pick up anything else or because mom and dad and grandpappy and the like did it, the listen no matter what. How many markets, even small ones, can get by with running 10 minutes or more of STRAIGHT commercials? We've done it around Christmas and election time and I know the other ones have as well. Is it good radio? Not always. Is it informative radio? Most of the time. It is amazing to walk down the street in Logan when the weather is warm and the windows are rolled down and hear nearly every radio on the the 8:00 news. Of course when I go back on the air they all turn their radios back off again.

A lot of guys have gotten their start in Logan or Williamson or Pikeville because that is a place to start where people know who you are.
It would be very hard to start in logan with a big city smell.
But Jimmy Nunley's son.... Everybody knows him.
And they will accept a new guy because he is one of them.
If you are not one of them, you do not know what I am talking about.

Jay and I were in the same graduating class at Logan High. Kidd Conley and I worked at WLOG together and are born on the same day in the same year. Burke Allen and I both use "Allen" as a last name, although neither are actually named "Allen". I was doing a remote one day around ten years ago when a young Zak Tyler and I struck up a conversation. He was living in Logan at the time. "Last One" and I worked together at WLOG in the early 90's.

And you're still wondering why in Southern West By God....EVERYTHING IS RELATIVE.

Very good! My little 3KW FM is in a town of 4000 and we don't pay too much attention to the counties/town surrounding us. The newspaper is a weekly and the Wichita Falls (150,000-plus) stations that put a signal into the county do nothing for the community - and we would expect them to.
People who don't like our format listen because of the way we intercouse with the community. Yes, lost dogs, who died, birthdays, remotes from parades, Chamber of Commerce Yard of the Month, High school football --etc. We have lots of $100.00 monthly packages that make it possible for just about anyone to be on the air, if they want to. Small town radio has an interesting niche, different from what listeners expect/want in Charleston or Wichita Falls. And if you can deal with being Mom/Pop operation, you can make a little money. Several years ago a tornado criss-cross the county and most folks were without power 1/2 weeks --- In the middle of it all - a listener came by to bring us gas for the generator and said "this station is the filber holding us all together" -- pretty cool!

Trust me, im not saying stop the dog lost announcements. Im not saying to quit being hometown. You have me all wrong on this.

What I am saying is GROW UP with your imaging, on-air presentation.

Tom Poleman once told me, you can be anywhere in the country...New York, Kansas City and even Morehead Kentucky and radio should still "sizzle" and be buzzworthy. If you get sleepy and let the "little" things (imaging, jingles, structure) pass you by...youve lost the battle.

And we might be on the same page. What is imaging? Is it the same for NYC, Chattannoga or Bluefield? The worst radio we ever heard was in the
70s when FMs bought Schaffer automation systems, signed up with TM or
Drake. The imaging went right down the toilet at the 20 or 40 break for
local spots/promos -etc. Small town radio doesn't have to be "yahoo" but it is if you pretend like you're something else.
