Kentucky sues makers of OxyContin
PIKEVILLE, Ky. - Kentucky officials on Thursday sued the manufacturer of OxyContin, the prescription pain reliever dubbed "hillbilly heroin," because of widespread abuse in Appalachia.
A lawsuit filed by Kentucky Attorney General Greg Stumbo and Pike County officials demands millions in compensation from drug maker Purdue Pharma.

Drugs are getting out of control in these parts. The per capita crime rate in much of WV is higher than many major cities. Mostly thefts and break-ins by addicts looking to support their habits.
And most police departments are severely under staffed, underfunded, and under-resourced to effectively deal with the problem.
It's a mess.

You can't possibly be comparing Oxy abuse with marijuana use. There is a tremendous difference. The manufacture of Oxy should be just as illegal as the manufacture of heroin. The medicinal benefits do not outweigh the cost. The fact is they (doctors, pharmacies, Purdue, law enforcement) can better control the distribution of the product but they do not.
