Ok, I played with this a number of times.....as a matter of fact, it stopped giving me the option of change my answers!

It appears that one of the things that changes the outcome most is what you "want" to pay for housing. A glaring weakness is the absence of something that allows a preference for the kinds of jobs in an area.

Changes I would make to mine (and tried to make it make, to no avail):

-- Substitute "Dallas" for "Ft Worth"...if I were going to be there, it'd be in those suburbs north of Dallas.
-- Consider substituting "Columbia" for "Charleston" in SC...no, let's go ahead and do that.
-- Lose St Louis, El Paso, Memphis, St George, and Clarksville; replace them with Colorado Springs, Des Moines, Greensboro, Raleigh, and Atlanta.

Most of all, I want to live some place where shit doesn't close. I want to live in a place where I can get Arby's... or a Medium-Rare Porterhouse steak... at 4 A.M.

That's fine, but know that the question that seems to be related to that is really specifically about night clubs and bars, not stores and restaurants that happen to be open 24 hours.

Oh, yeah. Although it, along with all of Iowa, has seen some aging of the populace, that's changing as Des Moines (along with a similar Boise) heads in the direction of being a near-future tech boomtown.

Kinda. But seriously.

It's also strong in transportation and logistics and, being the state capitol, state government, finance, and media. Drake University (in-town) and Iowa State (~25 miles north) are in the metro, and white-collar jobs those kids can fill are abounding in Des Moines, especially West Des Moines. West Des Moines has all the big retailers (except Nordstrom or Saks) one could want, featuring two big malls, one of which -- Jordan Creek Town Center -- is one of those cool indoor/outdoor/lake/village shopping and entertainment places (pictures linky).

And all the problems cities usually have? Des Moines has almost none of them. Unemployment is almost nonexistant, crime is only about one-fifth the national average, and communting problems are rare (possibly bad for radio, though -- commute times average only 15-20 minutes). It's been one of those "best-kept secrets" you hear about, but it's not very secret anymore. Its only notable downside is the potential for weather extremes (but, hey, its downtown has a skywalk like Minneapolis does).
