Dentist buys historic music hall, vows to reopen in October

WHEELING -- Live Nation has sold the Capitol Music Hall, a landmark closed because of costly fire code violations, to a dentist who vows to reopen it by October.

Dr. Manny Velez, who has a practice in Wheeling, said he and two partners, Theresa and Jim Childers of Bellaire, Ohio, have signed an agreement to purchase the theater.

Real estate agent Carl Nix has said Live Nation was seeking $850,000 for the theater. Velez said he and his partners will not pay that much but he would not say what the purchase price was.

"I could have purchased a house in Oglebay Park Estates that would have cost me just as much as we are paying for the Capitol Music Hall, but that would not have been anywhere near as rewarding an experience," he said Wednesday.

Velez said he expected the deal to close sometime in September.

"We have done our homework, and I can tell you that I would not be buying the Capitol if I didn't think I could earn a profit from it," he said.

The Wheeling Fire Department found 23 fire code violations during an inspection in February, including the lack of an approved fire alarm system, poor electrical wiring, out-of-date fire extinguishers and broken or nonexistent emergency lighting and exit signs.

Beverly Hills, Calif.-based promotion company Live Nation, which was created when San Antonio-based Clear Channel Communications spun off its concert division in December of 2005, closed the theater in May.

Wheeling City Councilman Barry Crow has estimated that renovating the building and bringing it into compliance with the city's fire code would cost between $3 million and $5 million. Velez said he does not believe the work will cost that much.

The Wheeling Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra will continue to use the Capitol Music Hall. They have had to use Wesbanco arena which doesn't have the acoustics of the capitol music hall.

No the conductor will not lead. The orchestra will keep time to the sound of Huntington whiners.
