Kathy Mattea joins Al Gore and anti coal crowd.
Grammy Award-winning country music star Kathy Mattea is joining the fight over mountaintop removal coal mining. The Cross Lanes native is also speaking out about climate change, throwing herself into two of the biggest environmental controversies facing her home state.

Mattea has been trained to deliver Al Gore’s now-famous climate change slide show, and has been giving the presentation over the last few months.
Next month, Mattea plans to take a flyover of the southern coalfields and visit Kayford Mountain near Cabin Creek to see mountaintop removal sites. On Wednesday, the Sierra Club began promoting that visit.

It isn't strip mining that's a problem. It's the scale of the operation that is the problem. If you limit the acreage per square mile strips can be done and rotate the sites the land can be reclaimed and the level of damage to water tables. streams, valleys, and living space is acceptable.
This is coming from a guy who despises King Coal and wanted strip mining banned completely. I still hate King Coal, but I also recognize we must get the coal out of the ground. It can be done without turning the coalfields into a marsh/desert and without destroying entire communities.
It won't be that way, but it could be.

Good job on the site, Jerry. I consider myself a democrat but an environmentalist I am not.
What possible reason could there have been to give her a damn Grammy? She's washed up and she'll never have a top 40 song again.

Go down to southern wv, other than the golf course for an example, I'll agree when done properly strip mining isnt bad, but that is where the problem lies, its rarely done properly.

She must know....but isn't concerned....about what has happened to "strong voiced" individuals in WV in the past. She's not dealing with a 'here to see ya' crowd here. Violence and some sort of destruction of property may result, depending on whos toes she hammers!
