Diet drug - "ALLI"

This is a good place to drop general and weird news, entertainment, and general show prep material that might be interesting to air talent or producers. Hot dog threads ALWAYS welcome.

Diet drug - "ALLI"

Post by genlock »

How many of you fellow fat-asses are gonna try the over the counter weight loss drug "ALLI"? Sounds like it has some promise. Some strange side effects tho. I will report my findings here.

I though about it. Then I read this:
but you have to do your part by changing the way you eat.
That ruins it for me. :(

It's just a lower-dose, OTC version of Xenical, a drug/substance which binds itself to the enzymes that digest fat from food and prevents about a quarter of it from being absorbed in the intestine by carrying it on out through the exit. That creates a potentially serious problem for the user, though -- unexpected and uncontrollable bouts of shooting diarrhea. The warnings tell new users to wear dark clothes and have changes of clothing with them at all times.

If I recall, the claim/semi-promise is that it can help those who are supposed to be dieting and exercising already lose an additional 15-20 lbs in a year by blocking some fat, and the cost of a year's worth of the drug is over $700. Now, you do a little math....

20 lbs of fat = 70,000 calories
70,000 calories a year = 191 calories a day

$700 a year for what amounts to 10 Pringles and 2 Chips Ahoys a day.

You could just cut 10 Pringles and 2 Chips Ahoys a day and still have the $700...plus whatever the snacks cost.

You could spend $100 on some good walking shoes, walk for 30-45 minutes a day, and still have $600.

You could spend the $700 on a gym membership or two or some decent home gear and put on four pounds of muscle...that four pounds of muscle would burn 200 calories a day just to exist, and you'd have whatever calorie-burning from exercise you did on top of it.

You could spend the $700 on a good bike (road or stationary) and gear and burn off 191 calories in 15-20 minutes.

The "substitutes" are many, and all are a lot better and better for you than pooping oil and goo every day.... ...but, before even believing it would be saving you 191 calories of fat a day, realize that the manufacturer virtually demands a diet that contains no more than 50 grams of fat per day. Knowing that Alli blocks about a quarter of it, that means Alli will actually save you only 110 calories a day! (A pound a month...for $60.....)

And, if you think about it, what is the pill really doing? Technically, it's preventing the digestion and absorbtion of some dietary fat, sure, but what it's really doing is providing a very negative, unpleasant, painful, and possibly extremely embarassing consequence whenever you eat more than the recommended amount of fat...it's a kind of simple conditioning that may or may not stick in the long run.

Why not just do the right thing....the thing that we all know is best for us in the long run.....

...where our logo color is green 'cause that's what it's all about!

For just $700, I'll keep telling you "eat less, exercise more!"
....over and over....I'll never tire and never give up on you!

...as long as your checks keep clearing....

Why not just eat Olean potato chips fried in Olestra. Same stuff, same results, but not in pill form.

Alli Weight Loss Pill May Lead To 'Unpleasant Toilet Experience'

The first FDA approved over the counter weight loss pill is on the market. The pill is supposed to help people lose 50 percent more weight than other diet supplements. But doctors said the new pill has some side effects that can keep you sidelined.

The new pill is called Alli. Taken three times a day with a low-calorie, low-fat diet, doctors said you'll lose weight. But if you eat food high in fat, you'll feel it.

"It's conditioning. It's like if you eat this stuff, you're going to have an unpleasant toilet experience," Dr. Konoy Mandal with Research Medical Center said. "It's not going to sound good, it's not going to look good and you're not going to be very popular in public."

Alli works by preventing fats from being absorbed in your body, but doctors said it can leave you with some very embarrassing bowel movements.

"Buy some extra underwear," Dr. Mandal said. "You're gonna have some events."

Under the drug facts on the back of the package, the manufacturer said gas with oily spotting and loose stools are part of the treatment effects. "Genius marketing," Dr. Mandal said. "Treatment effects...instead of like farting and pooping explosively."

You'd wind up wishing.

By my understanding, it would be just the grease out of the Big Mac...

...turned a little brown.....

....by itself!

I don't really know that much about it, but, to answer something from above, yes, "they" are saying this aspect ("treatment effect") lasts only a couple of weeks....

...which is probably how long it takes your brain to associate the fatty foods with the "treatment effect" and start to refuse or cut back those foods....

Damn.

I'm just wondering how red and irritated one's ass will be after all the wiping.

Well...if they wipe. Last time I was in Wal-Mart I smelled a WOMAN smelling of "Butte'" by Eau De Toilette.

Remind of Maddog Mike Collins, one of my best friends, who I worked with at WLOG and WVOW. He was described his, uh, waste, as somewhat resembeling modeling clay.
