The biggest problem I saw with Jack here, I don't know about elsewhere, is that it wasn't really a "We play what we want" format. It was more of a classic hits format. If it was really "We play what we want" then the playlist should've been in excess of 3,000 songs and they should've had a segue like Neil Diamond to GNR to Kenny Rogers to Pat Benetar...truly an iPod-like mix of music. Would that have worked? Who knows, but it certainly didn't as it was.

I never heard them play the kind of mix that really made me want to continue to listen just to see what they would play next.

They didn't distinguish themselves away from 100.9 enough and the market, obviously, couldn't maintain 2 classic hits formats.

The Jack playlist generally comes from a library of 1,500-2,000 songs, mixed from a rotation of hits from 1973/74-present. Because Charleston had the satellite version of it, the station was not able to be tweaked for any market-specific factors.

Country usually isn't part of the mix; originally the format was dubbed "Classic Hits/Hot AC" on 100000watts.com, and in many ways that was an accurate description of it.

A question: if 107.3 reverts back to its previous Oldies incarnation, what happens to the Oldies format on 680 AM?

Well, it looks like they've followed the V100 model...blow up a successful station, then try to rebuild the format on the frequency. That's what happend when they tried CHR on that stick years ago.

They re-built V100, now let's see if they can regain dominance with "Classic Top 40 KAZ." But this does sound satellite, though. I think Bishop was largely responsible for rebuilding V100 to ratings greatness.

I wonder what will happen to 680 now?

The whole premise will be to make a younger version of Oldies, without using the term Oldies, because it is anathema to agency buyers and has a bad connotation with listeners under 50.
Nothing before the Beatles, playing into the early 80's. They're hoping to drop their average listener age ( as compared to Oldies 107.3) by about 5-8 years is my guess.

In Huntington, Magic plays 3 hours of Tom Kent on Saturday nights. It's all 70's and a pretty good mix.
