Exasperated listeners weary of hearing the same songs over and over on the radio may have something to cheer about: a pair of innovative deals that could shake up the music playlists of some of the nation's largest radio-station chains.
Four major radio broadcast companies have tentatively agreed to pay the government $12.5 million and provide 8,400 half-hour segments of free airtime for independent record labels and local artists in separate settlements aimed at curbing the persistent practice known as "payola,'' according to sources.

then he wrote back with a comment about socialism......that's a complete crock o' shit.
the reason the independents aren't getting their records played is because they're crap. the independents don't have the money to spend on the best producers and the best studio's in the country. perfect example: Chasing Corona (note:max fm's battle of the band winners if anyone wants to hear the song i'll send it to you, it's pretty good for just a few navy guys just bangin around)
the cd i have, GREAT SONG. if they'd had a top name producer and a huge studio... it would be a "HIT SONG"
if the independent record label has a "hit", good/honest programmers would play it. (think Roadrunner Records and Nickelback a few years ago) plain and simple. what this is pointing towards is exactly what Canadian radio has to put up with.... before this is all over it's possible the FCC will be "over-regualting" us and making us play XX% independent and local music. that's BS!!! since when can they tell a grocery store that they have to sell XX% of of fruits and veggies from local farmers???
that's CRAP!!!!

And you would find this "hit" how? For every Nickelback there are a thousand Weekend Excursions. Considering that a "real label" can mismanage an upstart to the point of failure, I don't see how they become a ringing endorsement of hit potential.

i listen to EVERYTHING i'm sent. i spend hours and hours a week listening to new music, from everybody. i don't put "records" through a label filter before they hit my cd player. i feel if a band/label has taken the time to send me a cd, i should take at least a minute of my lifetime, and listen to it. that IS my job as APD/MD... i do despise the "ol' skool, take me out for $1000 lunch and i'll add your record" FUCK WADS" out there. (and if my competition is reading this... yes i've heard the stories and i'm talking to you Harvey.) these are the programmers that are causing the FCC to even think about this action. i will never claim to be a programming genius or whatever. but i love what i do, and i do what i love. and it's not so i can eat $1000 lunches with record reps, or have my own wine selection at the deli downtown, or slob on rock stars knobs. it's because it's radio. and if/when the FCC passes mandate that we HAVE to play "x" amount of "x" music, i will consider a new career. and the "kicker story" is when they were the only rock game in town, reps would dread coming into town. one time they had the gall to ask the rep "how much can we spend today".... sigh!
granted this is all "hear-say" from the rep it happened to.... OH, and there's the infamous "air hockey table story".... not the same station though. sure beats my last "meeting"... i got the breakfast buffet at the holiday inn next door. and i left the tip. and i didn't even have to add a record LMAO!

i think radio guys and lable guys and artists and the fans all have a different perception of how a hit record is made.....
different perceptions about how it's "made" but maybe not how it "sounds"...
i think fans, artists, labels and programmers all know what a true hit sounds like. but it's a very opiniated business. if you're talking "mainstream hit" all of the above will usually be pretty close to one another. as long as their all talking about the same format. for instance you wouldn't want Nunley picking your mainstream "country" hits. although, being a seasoned radio guy, i bet he still could, if he had to. i've found success picking mainstream hits in 3 different formats. top 40, country and now rock. if you know your audience and know your music, you'll know a hit when you hear it. now when you get outside of the "mainstream" it gets a little more fragmented and "taste driven. niched formats are where the indies can excel. but they're too fixed on the big piece of cheese. i'm not saying they shouldn't try, because every now and then it pays off. it only takes one "nickelback" to become a "player"... and the strongest swimmer get the egg.<< don't know how that relates, but i just thought it up, and wanted to work it in.
Radio 101: play the hits, and entertain the masses. if the FCC takes that away, what are we left with?
