Yes. Been running Beta versions for about 8 months, and working with the Enterprise RTM version now.

If it comes on your new PC, go for it. However, it is not worth buying separately "just to have".

I was messing with it on a Staples display model. The graphics are far superior to XP. It also seems to run smoother.

I got a new PC in October that is Vista ready. I will upgrade eventually, but I'm in no hurry.

Negatory on both of those. The graphics look "far superior" because they tweaked them to do so. There isn't anything special there that XP doesn't have or can't do (with the exception of AeroGlass). Unless you were playing a DirectX10 game on a high-end system, all your seeing is a theme, most of which could be imported to XP.

As for running smoother... the jury is still out. I haven't seen a lick of difference, except frequent pop-ups from Vista telling me that I have a compatibility issue with "Program X", and I should check with the manufacturer for an update.

Vista's DRM is on "holy-hell-lock-down".

HD-DVD and BluRay playback disables the component and S/PDIF outputs. Nice move towards an entertainment system, Microsoft.

Also anything remotely connected to recording or ripping media (Itunes) are having major issues running on Vista.

The least expensive DirectX 10 video card is $399.00.

Upgrading would be a pain.

New machines, only...so far.

Yep. I am running a "Vista Theme" on my XP machine as we speak. Nothing special. In fact, my first thought was "Who moved my cheese". Still, it is a sleek looking theme.

I'm just going by my 3 minutes checking out a display... On first glance, it's more impressive than XP. I would like to click around and really check it out before purchasing.

As I said, my PC is Vista ready, but I'm in no hurry. I would probably be better off waiting for a service pack release anyway.

I just installed Suse Linux 10.2 with XGL on my my oldest 2.8 GHz P4 laptop and it smokes the Vista (with Aero) on my 2.4 GHz Core2Duo with an nVidia 7900.

This is the Shiznit. No wonder MS threatened Novell with a lawsuit over the tool.

I have seen the future and hope it does not end up like OS/2.

I have Fedora 5 on an old junker machine but haven't tried Linux on a decent computer.

I'm more of an Ubuntu fan. However, they still can't play the PC games that I crave on occasion. Looks like Vista is in my near future (once I spec out my new home PC.)

Same here. The difference was that XGL was built into the Gnome shell. It is neat as hell to grab a window and shake it back and forth and see it wave like a sheet of paper. Or to pull up the corner of the current sheet to see to look at what is under it on the desktop.

I am going to put the XGL interface on the Ubuntu Gnome desktop in a few weeks. I just took the easy way out to see if XGL was as good as I have heard.

The issue I have with Vista is that is does not play well with iTunes. But with the latest update of iTunes, I have found that this Apple application is not playing well with much of anything, even XP.

Dell replaced the computer it sold me last year that went haywire with a new machine that arrived yesterday. Mad props to Dell for going above and beyond; my replacement computer far exceeds the one it replaced, and they lived up to their warranty promise (and then some.)

My new machine came with Vista installed, and though I've only had limited time so far to use it, the system seems to have strong potential. I haven't tried iTunes on it yet -- that's probably an adventure for later this afternoon.

(And there's the pesky problem of data retrieval from my old hard drive, but first things first.)

Do any of you who have used Vista have any tips on things that might help in using the new system?

Turn off the permissions shit. I dragged an icon from my desk top to my quick launch and the damn thing popped up with that Cancel or Allow shit! Good God that is irritating.

Many online PC games are still incompatable with Vista, including one I play.

I think I'll stick with my original plan and wait awhile...

the thing MS is trying to do with vista and the whole "home entertainment experience" is the fact that all the DRM is locked down but if you have an xbox360 in your house your PC will stream to it so you can watch all your movies
