Getting Drunk On the Air On WCAW

Does anyone remotely remember when I was in Charleston and got deliberately drunk on the air on Labor Day with Mike Hammer on WCAW? 1966! (Wow.) What an experience. I took the idea to Program Director Paul Howard, who initially didn't like it. However, It was a huge success and it was the first time it had ever been done on the radio. (I also worked at WGKV and WKAZ) Then -- In 1967, I did it again on KIKX in Tucson with Shadoe Stevens. Now...after these many years, I'm doing it again in Lake Havasu City, AZ (http://www.kntram.com) on KNTR, an AM and FM station. I host a daily talk show and it streams live over the Internet as well. I'm doing it on Memorial Day Weekend ---Friday, May 25...10am to 1pm California time. Anyway...I've lost touch with Paul Howard in last two years. Is he alive and well? Paul is indeed alive, well, and still working as an Account Executive for WV Radio Corporation of Charleston.

How well I remember that promotion...Roger, you were barely able to talk, and Mike Hammer was absolutely funny as he increasingly began screwing up a very good radio station...and you were fluffing words...and then uncontrolled laughing...it was a hoot...I was thate on standby, the college kid that could take over if you two morons totally crashed...the station...you were both incompetent by the end of the air shift...and YOU, Roger were ticked off because paul Miles did not let you guys keep the hooch!! (Paul had a taste for the bourbon...that is for sure!) I liked Paul Miles a lot...Mike Hammer once just screamed at me and cussed me blue for getting a song out of order on a remote...what a jerk faced jackass...but I'll let that slide for now...NOBODY worked for Capitol Broadcasting in those days and made many mistakes...you were damned good or you simply did not work there...so I was lucky to be among those pros in those days...what a place to learn my craft.

I still hear from Randy Scott occasionally, and Gil Blassingame...all good memories spent with the beat broadcasters in the business...WCAW was a monster and the best radio station I ever listened to...you guys were THAT good...it was an experience being there in the late 1960's...
