Have They Run Out Of Money ?

If it's about broadcasting, radio, TV, satellite, cable, this is where to talk about it.

Have They Run Out Of Money ?

Post by lastone »

It's 5 PM Saturday and on 33.1, 33.2, 33.3, it's the same program (33.2 delayed by about 2 seconds).

Is WVPBS broke ?

What gives ?

Nobody watches PTV on saturday and sunday afternoons.
Normally they send PBS Create on 34-2.
Maybe there is a problem or something.
Don't know.

Educate me! Why does every station run a HD channel and then a standard definition channel with the same program? Cable and dish networks all process the HD channel into whatever they want to supply to the subscribers and that's why we see double converts through cable/dish boxes many times. Then most stations use 2 (the second channel) to run something different but nobody runs 4 channels because the digital stream doesn't support it if all 4 channels are running content with significant motion. What happened to the 4 programming and revenue streams? Most likely they don't sell. But do they not sell because they are not programmed with different/alternative programs? I don't really undersatnd what happened to the miracles of HD TV for the viewing masses. Seems we got the same old stuff that sometimes looks better but many times looks worse. And diversity of content/programming doesn't exist in most markets. Bring an ignorant old fart some clarity! Please.

I suspect the cable companies want a SD and an HD stream from the stations.
Just a guess.

And the other thing.
Most of the stations in the US are just happy to get digital up and running.
Some market leaders, like wsaz and wtap grasped the possibilities of additional program and revenue streams very early.
WSAZ and MYz have found ways to use facilities that were under-used in the past. re-branding and re-using news and
syndication programs and when necessary due to sports or special programming, moving wsaz stuff to MyZ.
Public television stations use programming streams that were available for years as time-zone delays and feeds
that were created for cable only feeds. Paxon broadcasting (now ION) always has had 4 streams running.
KET at some time has 6 streams running. The regular 4 plus the senate and house feeds from the general assembly.
Most of the program streams are specialty user content and not on cable. Before high bit rate digital became available,
low bit-rate standard 480i streams were regularly converted to analog without any problems or comment.
Bit-rates as low as 3 mbs were used. Analog looked so bad in retrospect, it might have actually been an improvement.
As stations upgrade to a full digital system and dump all the analog junk it will be difficult to easily mount more streams
on the broadcast signal. Digital is just that much easier to handle in plant operations.
