Charleston Police Will Use License Plate Scanners to Track Criminals

The Charleston Police Department will soon be armed with automated license plate recognition equipment.
The scanners will pick up plates related to stolen vehicles, fugitives, and drivers without a license.

The cameras will placed on top of the police cruisers and will run license plates through National Crime Information Center as fast as you can snap your fingers.

Lot's of police depts use these scanners now, and I can see abuse in the future.
For instance, it's a well known fact that cops run license plates of attractive woman to see where they live. Take this cop for instance, who was forced into retirement for stalking women in Charleston for months.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A former Charleston Police Department captain was charged Wednesday with one count of battery and three counts of harassment regarding two different women at a Kanawha City restaurant, according to criminal complaints filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court.

Myron White was placed on leave in May when Charleston Police started investigating the allegations against him. He was forced to retire in November.

According to the criminal complaints filed by Charleston Police Sgt. Eric Hodges, White called Melissa C. Pauley at the Bob Evans restaurant in Kanawha City in December 2009 or January 2010.

He told Pauley, who worked at the restaurant, that if she wouldn't go out with him he would kill himself, ( this was a Reporters mistake, as White actually threatened to kill Melissa Pauley's husband ) according to the complaint.

"This occurred after numerous previous attempts by [White] to get Mrs. Pauley to go out with him, all of which were rejected," Hodges wrote in the complaint.

Pauley's husband, Bill, told White to leave his wife alone, according to the complaint.

On May 3 of this year, White allegedly cornered another woman, Janie George, inside the Bob Evans. White grabbed her by the shoulders from behind and turned her around, according to the complaint.

George, "felt the unwanted physical contact was insulting and harassing," according to the complaint. "This occurred after [White] had on numerous occasions asked Ms. George to go out with him but on each of those occasions she had said 'no' and had also told him that she wasn't interested in him and that she was dating someone."

Later that month, White allegedly took photographs of George while she was sitting in her car outside the Charleston Police Department. The photos were taken on his department-issued Blackberry phone, according to the complaint.

The incident happened after Charleston Police Chief Brent Webster told White to stay away from George, according to the complaint.

On Oct. 16, after White had been placed on administrative leave, he allegedly went to the Bob Evans again to find Melissa Pauley, who had filed a complaint against him.

"After being unable to locate Mrs. Pauley, [White] told another Bob Evans employee to let Melissa know that he was still getting paid while on Administrative Leave and that she hadn't done anything to slow him down," according to the complaint.

Wonder if these scanners just give the cops general information like "STOLEN"... or if they also give complete info like name address etc?

A piece of clear plastic over your license plate renders scanners moot... Coating it with saran wrap will do the same thing.

Since it causes reflections, etc.

If you want to be really low tech, mud and dirt does wonders.

Are you sure you're not thinking radar? I'm pretty sure these scanners are little more than cameras that could easily read a plate with a clear covering over it.

The scanners, which cost about $20,000 each, are mounted on a patrol car and use character-recognition software to read numbers and run them through databases.

Do license plate blockers work?
Absolutely NOT! I purchased both the photo blockers and the thick plastic that covers my plates and got 2 tickets for making a right turn on red. I had to pay $100 for each ticket. This is an internet scam, and these products DO NOT work.

Not even hours after the shooting, MSNBC was already railing against the FOX News and talk radio "agitators".

This guy appears to be a mentally disturbed loon with mostly incoherent and disjointed ramblings. We simply don't have enough information at this time to know whether or not he was "agitated" by talk radio. But yet as I type this, Wolf and Friends are talking about it on CNN...

I'm amazed how fast this tragic event was politicized. We'll find out the real reason "why" soon enough.

In the meantime, I wish her a fast recovery.

And I certainly don't advocate the use of firearms against elected officials we disagree with...
