I was watching a show tonight about an American furniture company that had 5 or 6 plants in several states. They had to close every single one down due to imported furniture that they could sell cheaper, and have none of the labor and other issues.
But here's the interesting thing:
The owner stated that they did everything in their power to lower costs and keep the plants open. They then ran the numbers all the way to.... ZERO labor costs. They discovered that even if their hundreds of employees worked for FREE... they still couldn't compete with the imports that they were selling!
Think about that for a minute.
American companies have so many other expenses, taxes, rules, regulations, paperwork etc... that they couldn't make it with FREE labor!
THAT you cant blame on China...

But here in the heart of American furniture making we've had several companies return manufacturing to the area because of increased shipping and labor costs from Asia. And at the Fall Furniture Market in High Point, the largest of its kind on the planet, the hot items were American made furniture because of the increased demand for higher quality. So it's not all bad.
