It's been a year since Johnny Knoxville of "Jackass" fame premiered his documentary about the Whites (the Jesco Whites) of Boone County at the Tribeca film festival, to much fanfare.
Now West Virginians can see for themselves what all the fuss was about and, for better or worse, the whole country can get a glimpse into the Mountain State's most notorious modern-day family.
"The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia," which Knoxville produced, was shown last week in limited release at Tribeca Cinemas in New York, but now through June 16 anybody can order and watch it through video-on-demand.
It's hard to tell how much, if any, dramatic license was taken by the filmmakers, but more unsettling was the sight of Jesco's niece Kirk White. Just hours after giving birth to a baby girl and still in her hospital gown, she crushes up a pill and snorts it off a hospital nightstand while the infant lies in a bassinette a few feet away.
It's worth watching the film just to see how their fellow residents try to explain, analyze and generally apologize for the family.
Among those making cameos as themselves are Boone County Sheriff Rodney Miller, Deputy Randall White, attorneys Peter Hendricks and Francis Curnutte, prosecuting attorney J. Parker Bazzle II and musician Hank Williams III.
While Jesco gets plenty of screen time in the film - he serves as tour guide for the production crew, showing them around Madison specifically to point out all the places he has robbed - he isn't the focus of the project. It's the women in the White family who steal the show this time.
Moments later, however, right before snorting the pill in the maternity ward, Kirk tearfully talks about her hopes for her brand new baby girl.
She says she wants the child to "have her own dreams, and work hard toward them.
"You stay here in Boone County," she says, "I don't care how many dreams you have, it's not going to happen."
"The Wild and Wonderful Whites" also will be in limited release in Los Angeles beginning June 25 and will be shown at several festivals, including the Flyover Film Festival in Louisville, Ky., June 11-13.
It also can be ordered on-demand through many cable and satellite service providers or Amazon.com.

I am not going to pay $5.99 for this to watch on-demand, but I am going to pay whatever it costs to add it to my video collection. It will go between Matewan and We Are Marshall on my shelf.
