Wikipedia: 10 Million a year?

The founder of Wikipedia has been soliciting donations for a few weeks now. I thought of donating $5 or $10. But then I read this today:

For ten million US dollars a year and with a staff of fewer than 35 people, it runs the fifth most-read website in the entire world. I'm asking for your help so we can continue our work.

10 MILLION dollars and fewer than 35 people? That seems extremely high to me. I mean, he's been on line since 2001. You'd think the servers would be paid for by now. Even with upgrades and tremendous Bandwidth, issues, I find it hard to believe that it takes 10 million dollars a year to produce Wikipedia.
