...I'm currently attending the NCO Academy in Biloxi, MS. One of the posters in the hallway for Little Rock AFB mentions an Air Force Staff Sergeant by the name of Anissa Shero. The name didn't ring a bell, so I Googled her.

She has the unfortunate distinction of being the first female servicemember killed in Afghanistan (2002). I found it highly coincidental that she was a WV native (Grafton), spent a year working for a radio station (WTBZ), and was assigned to Hurlburt Field, FL (my first duty station).

She is interred at Arlington National Cemetery.

It is funny how we did not hear of the deaths of service people in Afghanistan. Other than Pat Tilman, the media did not make a big deal of the issue.

Come to think of it, it's funny how we don't hear anything about troop deaths anymore, from anywhere...

As for Arlington, I have three relatives interred there. It's hallowed ground. Eerie, but somber. Some parts of it are very quiet, only to be disturbed every few minutes by the rumble of jets taking off from Reagan National.

I have a cemetery pass that allows me to drive anywhere inside of it. Haven't been there for awhile, though.

I don't know where you live, but the tv and newspapers had accounts of all the servicemen killed in the last couple weeks in both Afghanistan and Iraq. That's here in Carolina. And of course, that was in the mainstream media. Maybe you've been reading the bloggers too much.
