Finally we are number one (in a good thing)
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A new study reports that West Virginia’s capital is the easiest place in the nation to work on an indoor tan.
The American Journal of Preventive Medicine found 18 tanning salons in Charleston. Using the 2000 Census estimate of 53,000 residents, the journal says that’s the highest ratio in 116 U.S. cities it studied.
The journal says the use of tanning lamps has been linked to two types of skin cancer. It cites estimates that 20 percent of Americans between 18 and 29 have used indoor tanning booths in the last year.
A bill introduced this month in the Legislature would require parental consent for children under 18 hoping to use a tanning salon.

It's prom season. Every girl (including their mother who thinks they are 18) are going to tanning beds.
I honestly don't get it. But whatever.

You forgot the large number of boys who also frequent the places, for God knows what reason...

With all due respect, genlock, I'm afraid I don't see why this is "a good thing." Sure, it's not crime, education, teen-pregnancy or poverty related, but perhaps its commentary on the attitudes of our vain, if not narcissistic, people.
(Note to self: Call accountant and ask about investing in tanning salons)

I'm gonna have to set aside some time this weekend to ponder that......

You guys are thinking like radio dj's.
Think like an engineer.
More tanning beds equals more available tanning AREA.
Extremely large women need longer times or bigger beds to tan all of their AREA.
Beds are all the same size.
Therefore:
Beds are in use for longer periods.
To tan the same number of people per thousand population, you will need more AREA.
Thus more beds. Then there are maintenance issues due to heaver mass of the tannee.
There is also the hose-down time to get rid of the sweat of the large person
and the disinfectant to kill the mold that is common to persons with folds of skin.
A simple explanation to a survey that is flawed.
