Hatin On The Northern Panhandle

There's no reason for us to be hatin' on each other. There's also no reason for us to keep accepting the status quo. I noted a new reporter for the Star News mentioned the miserable state of Route 2. Said reporter and others of the Fifth Estate should relentlessly pursue future plans of every politician they can find, concerning the fate of Route 2, and other roads similar to and even potentially more dangerous. Several of these roads are not that far from Charleston.

Politicians from all parts of the state should be forced to ride blindfolded in the back of a compact car of any road of our choosing, while their driver maintains a 55 mph speed. An undeniable 'Dukes of Hazzard' feeling will be immediately experienced, right before the inevitable carnage.

I blame the dead and their high voting rate.

BTW Wheeling Central got knocked out by Williamstown! Of course, my hometown of St. Marys allowed itself to be beat by Madonna. Magnolia won their game as well

Or should have to ride the roads in the back of an ambulance...I am also Fire/EMS in Triadelphia and there is nothing worse than trying to care for a patient while on horrible roads

I would put route 10 between Logan and Man up there with any bad roads in this part of the country, let alone just West Virginia.

Remember....Rt. 10 was to be what 119 is now, but Charleston nixed it right after they started surveying for the "study". "All roads must go to Charleston" was the decree you know.

As someone who works in radio in the NP, I will say that much of the rantings on here do make the area seem less than desirable from a radio industry perspective, but there are good radio stations and radio professionals in the NP. As to who runs the show up here, it depends on who you talk to and who they are competing against. From a ratings and revenue perspective, CC dominates the market with six radio stations ranked in the top 7. CC does have competition, and yes, it's true that WWVA is largely syndicated, but it is a myth that everybody prefers totally local radio programming. That is especially true with talk radio. There is a market for all listeners, and if you scroll through the dial, you will find what you want. I myself listen to ESPN radio almost exclusively, a station that is owned by a competing radio company, but that is my preference. I'm sorry that many of the postings from the NP get out of hand and consist of a lot of flamebating. I myself wish we could all just talk about radio across the state of West Virginia without all of the hatred. I haven't read or even posted anything on here in months, simply because it was getting tiresome reading the same rants over and over again. On a whim, I decided to check things out today, and hopefully, this thread is an indication that things are getting better, especially concerning radio in the NP.

I found it completely unsurprising that on today's "Decision Makers," the head of the Department of Highways mentioned that the only NP project was the Wheeling Tunnel. Thoroughfares downstate and in the eastern panhandle were much more mentioned.

I know "If you build it, they will come" goes only so far, but here in Tyler County, a head of the local development association told me that two strikes against us are the lack of high-speed internet access and lack of a 4-lane highway. I again also throw in that our county is the only one bordering the Ohio River without at least one bridge. However, our ferry is supposedly operating longer per day.

It gets back to carving up an increasingly shrinking pie. Until we develop the Virginia model of attracting business, we'll never do any better. We keep exporting our best product-our best and brightest young people. We import illegal drugs.

Well, that official is probably true. I'd be happy to get a Alltel cell signal when I go out to Middlebourne, let alone internet. BTW, I did a story in the Tyler Star about how the county's salt stores are at the same level they were last year, yet the roads don't seem like they get any salt. There is a huge difference once I cross over from Pleasants County to Tyler County.

Well, except for a privately owned railroad bridge.
You really can't count that.
