Oh my, why do I even try?

The research was completed in the HUNTINGTON METRO by a company you may have heard of once before. CONNOISSEUR. Guess who has that AC station at 97.9...oh and the Classic Rocker at 101.5. Isnt that just amazing?

If the holes have already been filled, why are you suggesting this now?

What "hole" remains open?

I (we?) have no idea. Your comments here and all over Radio-Info are...surprising.

Does PAY even have enough signal to affect Huntington, even if they tried?

If it's mostly cowfields within their signal pattern, then country is the safe bet.

I remember WPAY coming in loud and clear in Huntington back in the day. That was where my previous "Power Pig" reference came from. It seems when I worked in Gallipolis 'PAY was called the "Power Pig".

I'm curious if the broadcast map shown for WPAY-FM on radio-locator is accurate?

I ask because it was five years ago this month that the station's tower collapsed.

If WPAY-FM is billing at a level that pleases management, I wouldn't anticipate there being any major changes there. I'm curious about how successful the station is in selling ads outside of Portsmouth.

The map is accurate. I still can't believe that signal. Columbus to Cincinnati to Lexington to Charleston. Jeeeezussss!

WPAY is certainly an underperformer. The company that owns WPAY treats the station like some one-lunged Class A that barely covers 10 miles past the city of license. Most of the ads I hear are from Portsmouth and Scioto County, with a few Greenup County KY businesses thrown in.

The local air talent is horrific. WCAK, anyone?

I wasn't disagreeing with KentuckyMedia about WPAY's ability to be bigger and better than they are now. I just couldn't understand what he wanted to do with it ...

If the entire area was flat - that map is accurate. (See also Rice-Longley).

If WPAY had the same coverage it had before they fell below 100Kw - that map is accurate.

Field strength in Huntington denotes otherwise.

When I was back in that area over the holidays I caught them doing a remote and it was horrible...maybe even worse than the bad old days of WZIO (at least the ABC and later WW1 sat jocks on WZIO sounded good...)

Sorry. I don't own a field strength meter so I could go out and verify the map before I posted. The map realistically represents what I can receive in my car using a stock Ford AM/FM radio.

Is WPAY for sale or trade?
Like trade for a McDonalds?
Change call to WCTT?

I like these "what if" programming discussions. It keeps your skills sharp.

My questions are these...

Are you looking to get in the mix in the Huntington/Ashland metro?

Are you really looking to target 25-34 females?

What are the budget limitations for both air talent and marketing?

My job is to follow the research. This is what makes radio stations successful. If you are like most, you just hope you made the right format decision..name change, whatever it might be.

Research polls the audience, your target listener and asks..if we were to build a brand new radio station, what would you want it to be, what would you want it to sound like?

I had an opportunity to look at the research project prepared for Huntington metro. This format is ready to be dove into. And you must remember this, I highly doubt whoever buys WBKS is going to keep it Thuggin Favorites. So that allows someone to build a strong Hot AC and push WKEE into the Rhythmic hole a little more.

If WKEE doesnt have WBKS to support its rhythmic audience...it becomes vulnerable.

I dont know if anyone here has ever went through a strategic research project. My guess by some of the idiotic comments about my theory would say that you dont know what a research project is!

Research works not with you...but your listener, the ones who are going to buy at your advertisers, the ones who are going to give you ratings, the ones who are going to talk about you in the office...etc.

We seem to have a lot of rock type stations.
I think we need some different country stations.

I always figured WPAY should consider Classic Country.

Done right, of course. The right PD, air talent, music selection, promotion, and agressive sales support.

I don't see how it's worth it to try to take one signal and try targeting an area that's one to two hours' drive from the city of license, offices, and transmitter, competing against at least three other established players who each have more than one signal to work with.

Might as well just stick to the smaller pond.

Plus, the coming downgrade in power (in exchange for $$ for someone else's move-in to Columbus) isn't going to help.

With the way WPAY is managed and operated, they might as well be a Class A that barely covers Scioto County. Hell, boys, take the money and run. Give Columbus that 50 kW signal on 103.9. Cut your overhead by cutting your electric bill. Who would notice?

Maybe they should sell the big stick to someone else and buy 94.9. Then the coverage would fit the programming. :)
