58-WCHS shakeup; Weekley in afternoon drive

If it's about broadcasting, radio, TV, satellite, cable, this is where to talk about it.

Yes that was me on the Friendly Datsun Dealers Association. Sixteen Datsun dealerships decided to spend an extra hundred dollars per car sold to fund a new venture. Randy Jay Dailey and I with some help from dealer Roger Whaley, decided that this new money should be spent ENTIRELY in radio. It was totally NEW money in radio.

Sales went up 400% the first month as we bought 100 stations in that first buy. It stayed there all the time we had that account. Simply put, you CANNOT cover the state of West Virginia because of the mountains and sparse population unless you use radio. At that time television existed in Charleston-Huntington, a pathetically bad one in Parkersburg, one in Wheeling, one in Bluefield...high priced...low yield...LOL

So we did something really bizarre...we put the whole bundle of cash on radio stations all over WV parts of VA and it worked as advertised! We ALL did our jobs! Radio works in spite of the morons that max out newspapers and television and chew up budgets and deliver pablum to the people that need to move product. RADIO at that time was MONSTER good.

Now it's sort of not. But thanks Joel for remembering me. When we did get our hands on some budget, we spent it in radio!
That took fortitude and that took knowing it would work...(and it did!)

Calvin, Jr. was a great supporter of our efforts at Mountainet, with WCEF's affiliation, his influence with other station owners, and for putting the money on the line with ad buys virtually every week! Please thank him on my behalf if you talk to him.

Someone earlier said that Hotline is a dreck. I really have to disagree. It's live and local to the state. It's sports, politics, and good old WV Broadcasting show prep section. He's hit on local pizza, pepperoni rolls, and I probably missed the hot dog episode. Instead of no direction, I'd say it's ADD in a good way.

I stopped listening to music on the radio, when I realized that my iPhone was full of songs that I liked and the radio didn't always satisfy that need. Local talk about sports and pizza - That's something that was a pretty big void in my life outside of this website... seriously.

It is I that said it was dreck and, given a few more weeks of listening, I still consider it to be so.

A out of town radio vet that heard the show the other day hit on an interesting point. Their opinion was: "It doesn't matter if it's successful, it's CONTROLLABLE"...

WCHS's 3-6 slot is probably getting killed by the fact that Bristol airs Sean Hannity on FM, on 94.5.

I'll freely admit that if someone would carry ESPN radio all day in this market, that's all I would listen to. It's been WOBG in the mornings for me lately.. But for my drive home, I actually prefer the more diverse topic selection that Weekley brings to the table. I guess that's why Arbitron hands out the diaries. Spring book is coming up, and I'll be curious to see how this show moves the needle.

WCHS is rapidly becoming the station that has WVU sports, Rush Limbaugh and nothing else.

Huh???

The Sean Hannity show that has has a record high 2 and a half share on FM???? That's what's "killing" the WCHS 3-6 slot which just canned the afternoon host because a 7 share was underperforming?? THAT Sean Hannity show on FM????

Ok.......

LOL. Thanks for injecting a good dose of reality, Dave! It's amazing to see how twisted perspectives can be, when it comes to right-wingers.
