And let Bray win? I don't think so. The fact of the matter is, if the union folks end up with the upper edge, or do something that brings light to the way Bray is running this company, then we all benefit. I don't hate Bray, I just don't think he has a clue about running this type of company. And the fact that he doesn't see that he's running it into the ground is very sad. I've been with WOWK for over 6 years now and would love to stay there, but the only thing that I could see happening that would save WOWK is for it to be bought by somebody who see's the potential. Doubt that will happen. People like Bray Cary will eat their nose to spite their face, he doesn't know when to give up or losen the reins. Hopefully, if the union folks get the media attention that they deserve, people will see Bray for what he is, a hypocrite.

Were the layoffs yesterday or will be next Tuesday?

I guess they're officially next Tuesday, but I don't think that the 2 people affected are scheduled this week at all. I could be wrong. I was trying to get with a couple of the union people yesterday, but there was always "somebody there" and I didn't want to say anything. Something is brewing though. I believe they have something planned this weekend, but I don't know what it is, maybe a planning session or something like that. I have a friend at WSAZ who told me that they're already aware of what's going to happen sometime next week, but didn't have specifics or just didn't want to tell me. Whatever it is, they're doing a good job keeping it under their belts.

I agree completely. Leaving WOWK was diffucult because of the great employees they have....but I couldn't be happier escaping the insanity of Albert Bray Cary and Co. I wish the union folk well. I had much respect for them and enjoyed working with them as well.

The problem with dealing with Bray as a union is that he tends to do whatever he wants, gambling that the union(members and representation) won't go through what it takes to punish him for it. In some cases(such as the AFTRA negotiations in Wheeling), it pays off for him.

Shoe, if you're reading this, let some of these people know exactly what's going on. There are a lot of people on this board who can probably help you.

p.s. Love the shirts, nice touch.

I agree. However, remember all the mandotory staff meetings held by Bray where said over and over, "I only want people working for me that want to work for me. If you are not happy working here, you can leave anytime you want, we will let you out of your contract. Nobody will get mad, there will be no hard feelings. In fact, we will help you find a new job if necessary." And then when someone would take advantage of that offer Bray would get mad, threaten lawsuits and refuse to let them leave easily. I remember a producer, Megan, that told them she was not happy working at WOWK and she had a job offer at a station in Cinci and Bray contacted that station and suddenly the offer was pulled. This also happened to a couple reporters that tried to "leave" because they were not "happy".
Did Bray think that the staff would not find out from the former WOWK peeps that now work in that Cinci newsroom?
Now everybody thinks that Bray's speeches were nothing more than a trap or just mad ramblings. How can we believe anything he says after pulling stunts like that?

True story.

Wow. That is dictatorial to say the least. And it sounds bogus as hell.

Forgive me for asking because I'm only a radio person. Who is under contract at the station and who isn't? Is everyone associated with the news department (reporters, anchors, producers, etc) signed and delivered to management? Does everyone belong to the union (at operations where there happens to be one)?

All the more reason to show him that he can no longer treat people that way. Ratings at WOWK are the way they are because of his leadership/direction, or lack of. I know for a fact that the employees who work there (all of the most part) want WOWK to succeed and improve. Unfortunately, as long as he's calling the shots, that's never going to happen. He just doesn't know that yet.

Yes, I agree it does sound bogus as hell. That doesn't make it any less true, it is too absurd not to be true.

You want another one? Two weeks ago, Bray is at the WVU BOG meeting and Courtney Dunn is doing a live shot about the meeting. Bray makes the decision (he is the Decision Maker after all) two minutes prior to air that Courtney will hand the mic off to him and HE will be doing the live shot and report the information. Talk about awkward, let's just say he's not that good at reporting. All he did was disrespect his own employees that had planned and worked on that show all day.
That is DICATORIAL and that is not saying the least. ;)
Once again....true story. I wish I had a video file of that report.

Only production, engineering and commerial production are union. The reporters, anchors and producers (except for one) have individual contracts. Although, some of them are working with expired contracts and could be let go at any day, time or whim.

I hate to hear that anyone lost their job, but it seems so much of this rumor is coming from "my friend at WSAZ" or
"someone I know in the biz told me". Well Bray the Bully may be a tough man to work for, but I didn't see anyone beat up
on WSAZ and Gray management during their employee cuts which just two weeks ago included the business manager (the
accouning dept was cut two years ago and moved to their Gray's business hub in Florida). What the the recent departure of
the general sales manager, local sales manager, promotions manager and traffic manager. One of "my friends at WSAZ" said
they have lost 18 employees in nine months. And everyone thinks WOWK is so bad.

True story.

There is some truth to that story. But there HAVE been people who have left early and did not have to face the wrath of Bray. I left early and wasn't sued or told I couldn't leave. Still, that doesn't mean Bray isn't a manipulative liar.
