What do you expect when both of their ENG trucks are older than most people who work there?

happen lately during a number of network shows....

It's a good thing for WSAZ's corporate bosses that Sinclair is so cheap, and WVMH is so constipated.

sinclair is beyond cheap... you can add lazy, thoughtless and a few other adjectives to their list....Mr. Tom Jones wrote:It's a good thing for WSAZ's corporate bosses that Sinclair is so cheap, and WVMH is so constipated.

Today's news: Mis-spelled graphics.
Anchors alluded to "wrong tapes".
They still use tape?
Maybe wrong line selected on computer screen or wrong address typed into script by
producer or whoever does this.
The long slide continues.

Re: WSAZ on air mistakes
Been watching tv with my new 'converter' box with the old 'ears' lately and have noticed something about 3.2. The picture goes to hell when they go to camera. Video noise and streaks in the picture! Both the weather camera and the anchor camera were doing it. At first I thought they were playing back an old u-matic tape but then the digital 'stils' and the weather map were perfict. Anyone know why?

Re: WSAZ on air mistakes
I am practicing for February cut-off and have not watched analog off-air in months.
I have not seen this effect. It is likely that your digital box is , because of your antenna situation,
not coping with transitions due to multi path or noise or something like that.
If there is a maintenance screen, go to that and adjust your antenna for fest s/n ratio and
then try watching again. When the adaptive equalizers become overworked,
the picture will freeze or you will experience break-up.
It is easy to be fooled by a perfect picture while using a poor antenna.
That picture will go away when additional multi path, interference or other problems cause the
digital equalizers to overwork. Another problem with 3.2 is that, on cable, MyZ is on channel 3
and if the local channel 3 off-air is strong, the interference if excessive.
Best idea: better antenna.

Re: WSAZ on air mistakes
I was going to suggest a couple of technical possibilities, but as I noodled them through, I had to conclude that Genlock is right.
Since 3.2 is "standard definition" via the RF path, errors is demodulating the 8vsb signal (which lead to bad bits in the data stream, which could lead to unrecoverable errors in the decoding of the error correction in those bits, which lead to artifacts in the decoding of the MPEG compression, which lead to blocks of error on the screen) the error blocks could be pretty big in the picture. We shoud not be too surprised to find that not all 8vsb demodulators are the same, especially the el-cheapo ones.
The DC Post had a front-page article Tuesday on the transition to DTV. I think the young woman needs a new antenna. Anybody want to help?

Re: WSAZ on air mistakes
The break-up at the transition point is because of the transmission if "I" frames.
Full picture, lots more data.
At other times the entire picture does not change much so "p" and "B" frames are sent.
Only the changing parts of the picture. Data load can sometimes be quite small.
A good test of the antenna system is a football game.
Snowing, wide shot of far side stands, crowd in multi colors waving flags and all jumping and moving.
And then the camera starts a pan and zoom at the same time.
A ton of the "I" frames and the limits can easily be exceeded at the encoder.
I have coupons, I think I will buy a converter box today. $9 and change at Wal-Mark.
Maybe hook it up to some shitty rabbit ears and use an unused video input on the tv.
Compare active equalizers in Sony Wega on a good antenna and cheap converter on rabbit ears.
Retirees have a lot of time to experiment.

Re: WSAZ on air mistakes
Ture, but wouldn't dropped I-frames lead to stuttering of the entire picture? What lostone describes, now that I think about it some more, is classic bit-starving. The video noise is the slow filling-in of resolution via the p and B frames. Streaks maybe are decoder hits. I see the same thing on WETA-DT, as they run PBS HD plus THREE SD subchannels. Static pictures look great. Everything else is crap.genlock wrote:The break-up at the transition point is because of the transmission if "I" frames.

Those cheapies have composite video output only, so you will have to adjust your evaluation accordingly.genlock wrote:I have coupons, I think I will buy a converter box today. $9 and change at Wal-Mark.
