WOWK Leaving Huntington

Post by NewsShoot »

Word from the block is that Bray is considering moving the station out of Huntington and expanding in Charleston.

Probably why Sandra is out. If the station moves to Charleston, they may lose Spencer, too. Any word on a timeframe? I thought Bray was trying to improve 13 when he teamed Scott and Sandra at 6 and made the very minor tweaks to the graphics. Looks like he wants to run them back into a grave. I think WVMH needs to find its grave that was dug before the company even started and lay in it. They need to face the fact they are a failure and sell all of their stations for the better of the stations and viewing community.

So, so true. When Bray took Ohio and Kentucky out of the picture, their fate was sealed. Don't know about Spencer, but I've heard he's locked in for a couple more years. He'd be a perfect fit for SAZ along with Chris Bailey and Tony, but that probably won't happen either. Cary needs to cut 13 loose, sell it to somebody who's willing to spend the money to bring it back to life.

Yeah, just because it's West Virginia Media doesn't mean they can't cover the other part of the market. It could have given him some viewers. Maybe Spencer could be released and jump ship to 3. Do you know a timeframe for Bray's move to Charleston? And yes, he should've sold 13 to somebody an hour after he bought it. Statewide Loser, indeed.

the owners have always wanted the station to be a Charleston. even to putting Charleston first in the Ide's. at least after Reeves sold it. But unless they can get the gutless FCC to change things they must maintain A studio in Huntingtom, as it is much to their regrets, A Huntington station. It says so on the LICENSE

What money the state economy has, surrounds Charleston.
Bray might be ready to finally consolidate the operations of all of his
stations into one hub. Clarksburg, Wheeling and Ghent could maintain
a small presence to satisfy legal and news requirements. Bray could save a lot of money this way.
No doubt, Sandra was expensive. Younger anchors will work for a lot less.
In consolidation, you would have far fewer of them.
Look at it this way, could their ratings get worse?

I know back in the old days you had to have a full studio in the city of license, but with the wimpy FCC now I don't think that's the case. I know one station that's never had its studio in the actual city, and now is moving and only planning a street-front bureau in the licensed city.

WDTV never had anything actually in Weston, did they? Their transmitter and one-time studios are in Jane Lew.

Not sure about tv, but for radio, the studio, which only has to consist of an ability to go on the air (mic and mixer), only has to be within the local contour of the signal.

I think that with FCC licensing, the station must have a studio in the city of licensing with the equipment and staff to be able to go on air. They may not need to produce full newscasts there. Therefore, the Huntington studio could probably downsize its staff, move most of production to Charleston, and have reporter shots in Huntington. They would still be broadcasting from Huntington, just in a very low capacity.

I think the requirement is for the studio to be within a certain distance of its COL. Not necessarily within the COL. I believe it is something like 35 miles but I could be mistaken.

The NAB is saying "Save Local TV" and Owners are saying "Dump it". Why not just turn the damn things off and go home ! :)

Could make another 'reality' show out of it and put it on cable.

WPBY, Huntington, has a studio in Charleston.
No studio in Huntingtn.
WSWP, Grandview, has no workable studio at all. Just like WKAS.

They key to getting around the studio requirement is by having the capability of going "live" from you transmitter site. If you have a camera with a mic that you can patch directly into the air stream, you meet the studio requirement.

I believe that they all are able to patch to the air. I had to patch the live van to the air at the transmitter several times when they had microwave troubles. They had to use the live van for a stl the first day when they moved to 5th ave new studio, throble was with the court house dome bouncing and canceling the microwave link out. also I believe WPBY still has a studio at Marshall. I know they have a studio but don't know if it can be sent to the transmitter.

Watching their newscast lately there is very little Huntington area news..the majority is Charleston and Putnam County..
Bray is delusional if he thinks moving the studios will make any difference...his operation can't compete with Sinclair and Gary
Even though 13 has had the number one network CBS..they have never been able to translate that into ratings for their local news even at 11P.
Losing sandra Cole will not make any difference...her looks are fading...and her on air presence has alway been robot like......with the departure
of her ex-Terry Cole from 13's operation several years ago it's a wonder she's lasted this long...Just put their weekend anchor Crissy Clutter on with Scott..
She's easy on the eyes..

If they are planning to give Scott a co-anchor, I would hope they go outside the station and find somebody who is good with experience. If they ever want to become even a potential threat for #2, they need some talented anchors. Jack Kane and Scott are talented with experience and deserve co-anchors who are in the same category.

Bray tells them what stories they are to cover. If you want Huntington news you have to watch 3 or 8. and do you notice that there are verl little spots from Huntington and none from Ashland or Ohio. and only A BIG story will get coverage from there. It is A shame what Bray has done to his stations. It was rumered that Bray was going to make Huntington the Hub for all his stations and only have A limited news staff at the others with news cast feeding all the stations from Huntington. He will not get anyone good as they would cost money.
