My friend Chuck McGill of the Charleston Daily Mail wrote this nice article about Ryan, who took his own life on Feb 24 after a life filled with physical problems and multiple medical procedures.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Wes Ryan could be considered lucky. The precise time he entered this world - 7/7/77, at seven minutes after 7 p.m. - would seem to portend a serendipitous journey through life for Wes.
Indeed, if he were still alive today - his 34th birthday - Wes would tell you he had his share of good fortune. When he passed away on Feb. 24, Wes was the co-host of "The Drive," a fledgling local radio sports talk show that was his own vision.
It was his dream gig.
But, as one famous voice of the airwaves would say, here is the rest of the story.
A few nights ago, Gena Ryan visited her son's Facebook page to re-read comments left for her son since his passing more than four months ago. A common theme of the heartfelt messages struck her.
"Everyone mentioned his smile," she said, noting that he did have a toothy, engaging grin. "Everyone said they would remember that smile. We didn't see that because he could be real with us. He wasn't unhappy when he was with us and he did smile, but the smile they are talking about, we didn't see that constant smile."
By the time Wes took his own life, he had told his wife, Sara, that the only time he was truly happy was the two hours he was on the radio.
