Is YouTube the new "radio?"
With the success of Rebecca Black and Justin Bieber releasing their first singles on YouTube and on other websites, it seems to be going that way.

Re: Is YouTube the new "radio?"
For about the past year I have:
1. Used YouTube extensively to discover new music (both old and new).
2. Gone and purchased the songs I have liked enough to want to own.
In essence, I am using YouTube as the "new radio"...

Re: Is YouTube the new "radio?"
it definitely makes the act of hunting for new stuff alot easier, but people will still listen to radio, until wireless net is ultra high powered radio will not die, now broadcast tv.... thats a whole other story,.. it seriously needs to pull its head out of its ass and look around, and I mean every non syndicated station that broadcast, wouldnt be no thing for networks to totally pull affiliations if they wanted, what will all these stations do for content, the companies that run them are so cheap that they wouldn't spend money on either programming to fill the time or pay locals to make shows. as long as there are cars, and house parties, and cookouts radio will never die....

Let’s say it’s January 1, 2012 and WOWK and the cable/dish guys have not reached retransmission agreement. WOWK wants money cable/dish guys say no. Let’s say WOWK says to cable/dish guys pay me or pull me. Cable/dish guys pull. CBS tells cable/dish guys, in June, which I believe is affiliate renewal month for WOWK, we’ll not renew WOWK’s affiliation and we’ll pay cable/dish guys based on audience delivery. Network doesn’t have to pay any network compensation to WOWK loses no audience and probably negotiates a lower price based on audience delivery with the cable/dish guys. Let’s say CBS does this in the bottom 150 DMA’s. What do the locals do? Local news is already over saturated, but a 24 hour local CNN might go? Does the FCC step in and protect WOWK and the other affiliates? Most locals could not feed the program beast enough content nor sell it. Is this a scenario for the demise of over the air, OTA, broadcast TV? You’re right the local TV stations better figure out what’s in store. The manufacturers have sold enough of the new OTA digital and need a new infusion of profits. I’d even go so far as to say the cable/dish guys better be looking for the next big thing to hit their cash flow. Just one thought, discuss please.

the cable companies see this coming, hence their sudden emphasis on improving technology, faster net connections, and even phone. thats where they're gonna make their money in the future

Either radio doesn't break new stuff as fast as it used to, or the internets just spreads content too fast to keep up with.
Local broadcasters should use YouTube to extend their local "brands". The content possibilities are endless...

But you need to be cognizant of how to use it so it builds your broadcast audience/revenue and also some revenue on its own. In other words if the viewer gets all they want from YouTube what is the reason to watch over the air?

Auto Tune is a scourge that needs to be banished from the Earth.
It is the Anti Christ.
It is the worst invention in history. It needs to be dis-invented.
The atomic bomb PALES in it's destruction compared to Auto Tune.\
If I were Emperor of America, I'd condemn ALL... ALL, even 13 year old Rebeca Black, to DEATH for using Auto Tune.

To say "YouTube is the new radio" is a bit extreme.Lee wrote:With the success of Rebecca Black and Justin Bieber releasing their first singles on YouTube and on other websites, it seems to be going that way.

I think the power of radio and sequentially programmed, heavily produced video broadcast as an influencer of the national opinion is beginning to shrink. Where did most of us hear the news of the Japan earthquake? It was more than likely from the web and not from the TV. It was a tweet that shook me to the realization that Bin Laden was dead. It is only a matter of time that an artist will be able to make as much more money by selling the music without a record label through the iTunes and Amazon stores rather than dealing with the restrictive crap and plundering grasp of the old media companies. Other than big media owning a many of the big venues and controlling the bookings, it is totally possible to be a huge artist without needing the likes of record label.
Now that all the Top 40/Hot AC stations in Philly have gone to voice track programming or have shows sent in from other parts of the nation for re-broadcast, I have pretty much turned off the radio. Most music that I get now comes from what I discover on Pandora or from what is reccomended from friends on Facebook and Twitter.
Old Media is dead and Rebecca Black/Justin Bieber just pounded a couple more nails in the coffin.
The first step in a successful revolution is to defeat all competing revolutionaries.

The backlash against AutoTune is going to utterly DESTROY current pop and rock artists.
A worse collapse than Disco's between 1979 (when it dominated) and 1980 (when no one would buy or play it).;

Look at this for example. This is the all time low in the history of talent. She isn't even particularly attractive. And listen to her real voice, you know why they have to use fake voice AutoTune.
Britney Spears who I used to ridicule here runs CIRCLES around Ke$ha in terms of talent (and Britney had little).
This kind of fakery cannot last. No wonder record labels can't sell anything, who in their right mind would BUY THIS?!
Oh and Rebecca Black and Justin (I sound like a 9 year old girl) Bieber are AutoTuned.
I despise AutoTune. If I were Emperor of America using it would carry a mandatory death penalty. I hate it so much I've decided it's a close second in terms of evil only (slightly) falling short of the ULTIMATE EVIL... the designated hitter.

REAL pop talent. Pop bands have been extinct since the 1980's.
Seriously, play the classics to the kids and they will demand better.
