The new Chevy Volt being introduced today

Post by CoolBreeze »

DETROIT - Chevrolet formally introduced the 2011 Volt to the press today, releasing for the first time some new information about the car's power train, trim levels and battery technology, and offering a detailed look at what customers might get when the vehicle goes on sale later this year.

The car plugs into your house current for it's charges. After 40 miles, a small 4-cylinder internal combustion engine using premium-grade gasoline creates electricity on-board using a 55 kW (74 hp) generator to extend the Volt's range to more than 300 miles. Unlike most current commercially available hybrid electric vehicles, the Volt is a series hybrid and thus actual propulsion is accomplished exclusively by the electric motor. In order to avoid maintenance problems caused by the same gasoline stored in the tank for months, the Volt has a sealed and pressurized fuel tank to avoid evaporation, and as a result, the fuel filler has to be depressurized before opening the tank. As part of General Motors' most recent S1 filing with the U.S. Security and Exchange Commission, the company made the statement that the Volt's all-electric range will vary from 25 to 50 miles depending on terrain, driving technique, temperature and battery age.

In the first unmonitored real world drive, Popular Mechanics achieved an EV range of around 33 miles. When the car's batteries were depleted and it was in "charge sustaining mode," city fuel consumption of 32 mpg and a highway fuel consumption of 36 mpg on premium gasoline.

The Volt will be initially sold in seven regions: California, Washington DC, Michigan, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Austin, Texas. Nationwide availability in the U.S. and Canada is scheduled to begin in one year to 18 months after the initial launch.

Here are the highlights that caught my eye:

1... The price tag is $41,00. ( more expensive than a BMW Z-4) However, The Volt is currently eligible for a US$7,500 U.S. federal tax credit and other benefits available in some locations.

2... For that money, you only get a three-year, 36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. However, the battery is warranted to 100,000 miles. In other words, after the car has fallen apart, you still have good batteries.

3... A "real world" 33-36 mpg isn't much for 41 grand.

4... You're stuck driving a car that is programmed to make artificial noises while driving on city streets to warn pedestrians, because otherwise the car is completely silent. I can see people hacking into that sound program in the future and instead of car sounds ... Oldies... Rap.... fart sounds.... who knows?

5 ... As the Wall Street Journal stated: "It is wise that the companies limit production. Except for consumers who want to say that they have one of these wonders of science and ingenuity in their driveways, the vehicles are nearly useless."

Taking bets on when GM goes into bankruptcy for the second time.

Maybe this time they will split it up and sell the pieces to Toyota and Volkswagen.

I think this is a better article about the Volt.

"26 mph at 80 mph commuting speeds"

I have an '06 Mercury Montego--like a Ford 500. Mid-size 5 passenger car, leather seats, etc. 6 cylinder engine. Not sure where you find 80 mph commuting speeds, but when I was regularly driving at 60 from Athens to Parkersburg (and then up to St. Marys at more sedate speeds) I regularly averaged 26 to 27 mph. On longer trips at 65 (such as down to Charlotte, or over to D.C.)--close to 29 to 30 mpg. With air conditioning.

So, why should I buy a Volt?

In my 09 Grand Marquis, I regularly run 80+ on the PA Turnpike to head to work. My land yacht in mixed driving pulls 23 MPG with a solid 27MPG on the highway at those insane cruising speeds. For comparison, my wife's V6 Rav4 CUV only pulls 24 MPG on the best highway runs and 17MPG in mixed driving. So I guess GM is attacking Toyota and their lousy mileage numbers and not Ford's better averages. Although, the 2010 Taurus and the 2009 Flex does not pull the numbers that we get our older technology Fords because of their high strung, high output V6 matched to the aggressive gearing that is demanded by today's car shopper.

I would not touch a Volt. But the Volt is not designed to be a car for people like us. It is designed for Hollywood elite to claim they are doing something for the environment by powering their car by coal instead of petroleum.

Maybe they should go all the way and get a steam powered car.

... or maybe a geothermal powered car now that we find that West Virginia is a hotspot. I know that will never actually work, but neither will these other cars.

It was also revealed that the Volt's ICE has the ability to directly power the drive wheels if the battery charge is below 30%, and the vehicle is moving at highway speeds, over 60 mph or so.

Just like a common electronic device, it becomes far less battery efficient when everything is running "full blast". Apparently, battery/electric motor technology is still not at the point where it can efficiently sustain high speeds for long periods of time, like on interstate road trips.

The enviro-nuts would have us believe that alternate energy is right there with "dirty" energy, if only the right-wing, corporate-funded, knuckle-dragging Neanderthals would just get out of the way... But unfortunately for them, there is still not a more efficient way to propel a 3,000 pound vehicle at 75 mph than with a fossil fuel powered internal combustion engine. Nor will there be in the foreseeable future.

I'm all for alternate energy, but it is what it is... It's still not ready for prime time.

As for the Volt, it appears that it is nothing more than a glorified hybrid, despite the misleading ad campaign.

I think the fat lady is warming up her vocal cords...
