Jay Nunley: English Teacher

Post by Mr. Jones »

WKLC INC. Rock WKLC/CHARLESTON, WV PD JAY NUNLEY is exiting the station and the industry to become a high school English teacher. JAY tells ALL ACCESS, “I will miss WKLC mightily and Rock radio just as much, but the time has come for me to hang it up.”

His last day will be FRIDAY; there is no word yet on his replacement.

I think Jay will be really good at this.
He may be the first English teacher ever with a personality that will make kids want to learn.
Or the first English teacher with a personality of any kind.
Woulda made a good senator tho.

Jay, I take it you will be applying all of the knowledge you have garnered from this website and transferring it to the next generation of this great nation of ours.

Best of luck in your new endeavor!

Perhaps this is just a clever ruse to hide the transition of Jay into the vacant West Virginia U.S. Senate seat?

Whatever the case, good luck to Jay -- and to WKLC in finding someone as skilled as Jay to fill his roles with the station.

Jay, speaking as a reading/English teacher, I say "Congratulations!"

Were you masquerading as ARP all along?

Seriously, because you've had so much in the way of life experience, you're going to be the coolest English teacher ever. Enjoy your new gig!

Advice from someone currently teaching:

It's a rough time to be a teach in WV - but if you end up in a good school, it can be an absolute joy. Don't fool yourself into thinking that it will be anything like Stand and Deliver if you end up in a rougher environment. Keep your nose clean for the first 3 years until you get tenure. Keep your certification up, and voicetrack a night shift to keep a few extra bucks in your pocket. It's tough to live on a teaching paycheck, but the benefits are alright.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words.

The All Access story left a few things out.

It will be some time before I am actually certified and in a classroom.

Before that happens I am happy and proud to say I will be returning to WVOW in Logan to be the morning news anchor. I am happy to end my radio career where it started and I'm terribly excited about doing some old school, quality, LOCAL radio for the next few years.

Going home to Logan also gives me the opportunity to help out my parents, be with family, and contribute to my community.

I also want to say that WKLC has been and always will be a special radio station for me. It was primary influence on my career track starting all the way back when I first discovered it at 11 years old. The reason I have been a rock guy in both action and spirit (inside and outside of the radio business) starts and ends with WKLC.

There are no (and shouldn't be) any goodbyes in this business. You people are not free of me and will continue to be subjected to my thoughts, opinions, and vintage smartassery.

That completely rules in a very hard way. Mind my rock radio descriptive lingo.

Congrats Boss. Thanks for everything you've taught me, done for me, drank with me, smoked with me (allegedly), laughed with me, punched walls with me, and for allowing me to be part of many master devious plans and bloody radio battles.

Most of all, thanks for putting me in Coach. Thank you for giving me a chance. No one else ever has without having their strings attached. No matter how good my ratings were. Am I so difficult and terrifying? I appreciate you seeing me for me and not as my uncle's nephew.

Thanks for the ride man. Thanks for being my friend.

Beers soon.

Wowsers. I knew this was either a huge joke or the coolest thing ever. I am very glad it is the latter!

They don't come better than Jay Nunley. Seriously.

And those are some lucky kids down Logan way...they just don't know it yet.

I wish you all the best in your journey. To be able to control your own fate in this business is rare, and it means even more to go back where it all began on your own terms. All the best!

Don't forget to find your school's AFT building rep. Student teachers pay nothing for their union dues. It's a shitload of legal protection and a teeny bit of life insurance for free.
